Is it legal to drive on a uk license in uk if you are not a resident there? other forums on this website are suggesting it isn't and if you get into an accident then your insurance may not cover you. Does anyone know?
What would you have insurance on (car wise) in the UK if you don't live there? Surely when you emigrate you give up your UK car and insurance anyway.

Is the cost of insuring it, from now to then, less than the cost of a rental for the time you are there?

We did try to sell it but as its only 2 years old we would of lost money on it (quite a lot). My OH father is using it at the mo so its not total waiste of money sitting on the drive.

I still have my car back home too, which my father drives. We then use it when we go home.

.. my question would be, could I return to the UK and drive a manual transmission vehicle (still having my old paper UK licence and Canadian card licence).

The last time I was back home in Scotland, I hired a car from Arnold Clark for 3 weeks with no problem. I clearly informed them that I had been resident in Canada since 2002 and provided my paper licence, showing my previous UK address, which could still be used as a primary contact (dad's house) ... they were perfectly okay with it, as well as having these details on their database.

More recently, I've heard conflicting reports on this issue, mainkly due to the changes of licencing in the UK.

Can you get a driver's abstract from DVLA? I have tried but was confused as to which department to get it from. I sent off £5 for one and have not heard anything since then.

you just posted £5 to a random DVLA department?

as for the drivers abstract, my insurance company here informed me that it was just the green counterpart (showing history, entitlement and convictions) that they needed...i honestly have no idea what else a UK "Drivers Abstract" would actually contain, nor why it would cost £5!

No such thing as a Canadian licence (issued by province/territory), no such thing as a U.K. one either (as Northern Ireland has its own licences).

Normally you need to be living in Great Britain to obtain or renew a GB licence.

Really - if it's that important to you, would you not seek advice from a British lawyer who deals in transport issues? Rather than a public forum?

Just issued from a different agency. They still say UK on them the same as any other.

Be like saying there is no MOT in GB because a private garage can do it whereas in N.I that's illegal. But a GB MOT is just as valid in NI.

Vash2009...I would contact your insurance company and tell them you are no longer a UK resident. They may or may not wish to insure you...best to find out now rather than if you are stopped by the police or need to make a claim. If the say they will insure you...make sure you get it in writing.

Having just read this thread you just have to wonder (for about a second) how a Canadian manages to hire a car in the UK and drive?

They land, show their Canadian provincial drivers licence and drive away. Simples!

If you (as a Brit with Canadian PR) visit the UK, you do what any other Canadian provincial licence holder does when visiting the UK... drive on your Canadian provincial licence.

Just because you may still be a UK citizen does not mean you have to have a UK licence to drive in the UK.

If you are a new PR of Canada, just swap your licence. Then forget you ever had a UK licence, unless you go back to reside in the UK again. Not having a UK licence doesn't make you any less British if that what people worry about.

Short answer is you can drive an automatic on your Ontario licence in the UK.

Never heard that one before. I've driven UK rental cars with manual transmission using Ontario and Maryland driving licenses.

I'd like to point out the above was in response to your post stating you already own a car in the UK. It does not apply to renting a car.

How can I drive without a UK licence? wouldn't the DVLA have a record that I surrendered my Uk Licence?
Thanks
You're a resident of Ontario, you use your Ontario licence, it's that simple. You're a visitor.
