It's just silly to be wanting UK style takeaway in Canada. It's up there with people looking for British style curry in Canada. You do realise you've moved right?
I think you’re missing the point somewhat. Immigrants influence their adopted country in many ways, especially by their demand for familiar foods.

If you think of Chinese food on a sliding continuum, with 100% authentic, like eating fried chicken feet and bats to the other end where its pizza and burgers, where does one move the marker to say this the acceptable level of edible authenticity? Personally, I think the UK style Chinese or Indian for that matter has struck the perfect balance.

yeah, but it's demographics, isn't it. In Vancouver, authentic Asian wins cos of that.

what really amazed me is when i called for an indian the other day and asked them to make a chicken tikka masala with no garlic, cos im allergic. she said no. i said, excuse me? she said its all pataks sauces and they have set ingredients. i was amazed a proper indian restaurant used consumer sauces and couldnt make a simple tikka masala!
discusted i ordered chinese ( which you are right they dont to properly ) too much ginger in everything. blergh.

that said, if its proper chinese food in uk or living out here no contest really

Next time you pass through Surrey, stop off and sample some authentic Indian food, you will be amazed. You actually see Indians sitting down and eating the food, not a bunch of drunken Brits with no taste buds left.

My new favourite is Bhaia Sweets, 128th and 68th. It gets busy.

Last time I ordered Chinese here there were no peas in the special fried rice. I haven't bothered since

If thats the place [Maurya] just down the road from me then its alright that is. If you order takeaway they knock about three dollars off each thing you order which if you are going have a bit of a session adds up. Just make sure you don't tell the lady on the phone to make it as hot as they like as they take it as a bit of a challenge.

We are too far out for you but should you pass, we order from Golden Medal In cloverdale, they have a small restaurant too. They do yummy sweet and sour chicken balls (well we like them!) the noodles and rice are good too.
The portions are huge too , compared to the size in the U.K , next day leftovers yum!

The Indian Oven on 4th is yummy, and does delivery.

The only thing I miss from Chinese food in the UK is duck pancakes.... mmmmmmmm

Any shopping mall food court will have westernized Chinese food. None of it's any good, mind you...

Thanks Chrissy, Cloverdale's a bit far out from me, but I'm always willing to travel for a good meal! I've been planning a day down at White Rock for a while, I think stopping there on the way back is a good idea!

One of the first things I figured about the mall food courts was to stay away from the Chinese food! But I do agree, most of it is the more westernised stuff, thanks!

Ya know, because I've moved, it doesn't stop me from liking things I've liked all my life. It's kinda why Richmond is so full of the authentic Asian cuisine, because all the people that's moved here want to keep eating the way they have all their lives. Curry is part of their culture, not Canada's, and they've brought it here with them. I've never mentioned the fact that yes I do love the authentic food, but even so, is it so wrong to want something else? Something that I'm used to?

I don't even see the problem with people wanting British style curry in Canada.. we live in a modern world where we're lucky to be able to get most of the things we've lived with in our previous countries. Wanting "authentic" curry in Canada is no different from wanting British style curry in Canada.

And yes, I do realize I've moved. You seem to be missing a massive point. I didn't move to give up all the foods I'm used to, I still like to make a good roast dinner as often as I can, and I enjoy making my husband other British meals he's never tried before. Here in Vancouver, I've seen specialist stores for every ethnicity I can think of, sure I get here in Vancouver being British is a smaller minority, but that doesn't make asking about some of our foods silly.

Yes but thats the exact point! some people like it becuase its sh!t! LOL! Some dont want the authentic Chinese food at times....even though they will no doubt say its far superior, sometimes people just want to have something in the style you were used on an occasion. Even though they have moved away from there and are happy with their new home, there is always something you will miss.

I liken it to the British bacon sandwich on really crap trashy "Sunblest" bleached white bread....total rubbish but it just fills that gap you once new....like a trip down memory lane, not everything in your new home will be to your liking.
