  1. Driving: road conditions, driving standards, ignorance of the (idiotic) laws.
  2. TV: 70 channels of cr@p.
On the plus side:
  1. Beautiful countryside.
  2. Standard of living way exceeds that in the UK.
  3. Not a nanny state.

If you're not management, and just the average Joe employee.... sure, all the employer has to do is pay you a few weeks wages (whatever is required by the Employment Standards Code of the province) and away you go. If you are fired for "just cause" (a very difficult standard to meet however) they don't even have to do that.

On the other hand, provincial Human Rights Commissions have often made dubious rulings in favor of employees. For just one example, I recall a case where a worker was hired to cover extended hours over the Christmas shopping season in a retail store. A few weeks after being hired the employee decided that it was against their religious beliefs to work such hours and refused to work when scheduled..... so he was fired. The employee complained to the Human Rights Commission and it ruled in his favor.... the business had to pay out thousand of dollars to the fired employee in compensation.

Bottom line is that employment standards can get complicated, and concluding that Canada's employment laws are "poor" because of the "temporary layoff" is perhaps a bit of an oversimplication.

The fact that when people actually win legal cases against employers its headline news is proof of the state of employent law here. There may be laws, but they are poor and extremely hard to make stick for any normal employee.
Now that is more hyperbole; the cases I provided links to regarded very prominent positions, and that was why they became headline news - not because it is unusual for employees to win their case in Canada.

Yes, there are employment laws, and they are not hard to make stick for any normal employee. A government agency will go to bat for an employee with a legitimate grievance, for example:

http://www.hre.gov.ab.ca/cps/rde/xch....xsl/1696.html

Bear in mind that each province only enforces its employment standards, not those of each complaintant's country of origin.

Obviously you have never been to Mexico.

Of course for about 1/2 the year, Canada has no insects whatsoever in your face.

In Mexico, they have the Pepsis wasp - it eats tarantulas alive.

Heh heh heh! No - I haven't been to Mexico. Indeed, I can imagine a trip down the 400 would be a Sunday drive in comparison. Hold on a minute - that's exactly the problem - most people on the roads here drive like it's permanently Sunday...

As for the Pepsis wasp - is it one of those parasitic ones that lay eggs in their prey which then hatch and eat their way out? Can't be bothered to look it up on t'internet...

...ok, actually, I'm too scared.

Yes on the Pepsis.

In Mexico, you had better not stop at a stop sign unless you will hit someone coming the other way if you don't..... or you will get rearended! The only time a Mexican is in a hurry is when they are behind the wheel.
