Passport question.

I dunno. I pay very little attention. Still, it would seem to me that a document that provides easy access to the US is likely to require more information than one that doesn't. I'm personally unbothered because the US authorities have had my DNA for years; if the British Government also wants a bottle of my piss I don't much mind.

CIC is still cogetating on biometrics. The canadian passport does not include the data.
As its taken a major political effort to even move to mere ordinary passports for cross border movement, I really cant see any move soon to upgrade that to biometrics too...the outcry from all those who just got there first ever passport in order to buy cheap booze and fags would be too much to bare if they then had to immediately replace them.
Of course. a canadian PP is only good for 5 years at present, so if biometrics wer to be mandated, it would probably be phased in over that time period anyway in order to be "no biggie" in practical terms.

On the original topic: I recently became a Canadian citizen and, as it happens, my UK passport (and the OH's) expire in June 2007. We are both of a certain age when our respective parents are of an even more certain age and neither of us would be comfortable not to have a valid passport in our possession even for a couple of weeks, since emergency travel is always an all-too-real possibility.
That's pretty much the main driver for me as well. The 3 weeks I was sans passport last year after having mislaid it were nailbiting in the extreme. Despite absolutely nothing untoward happening to those I care about in UK, the feeling of being unable to get on the plane at the drop of a hat is not one I want to experience again.

Agreed, up to a point. However, if a Brit is in Canada long enough for his/her passport to run out, and can hang around long enough to get it replaced, odds are that they are here for the long-haul.
I've just returned from a very pleasant week in Cuba. Pleasant apart from a few people, sadly Brits, who shouldn't ever be allowed to have passports.

ERM
Continuing the being in Canada when passport runs out. Don't none residents have to be in possesion of a passport that lasts longer than their stay??? Therefore if your passport is issued here you MUST be a RESIDENT.

I got my and kid's passport in London, no-one asked for proof of my status in the UK (although they could have figured out the likely status themselves).

Sorry biiink this was in ref to JAJ saying that the fact that Souv passport was issued in Ottawa only showed he was here at the time.
What I was trying to say is if its issued here you must be a resident.

Sorry, BUT as far as I was aware when you entered the country you had to be in possession of a valid passport that lasted until you HAD to leave the country.
I will stand corrected. (if I am indeed wrong
)Ah study permit is a form of residency. IMHO

I don't think you need to be a resident, you can just be passing through to get a passport. All you need is an address to receive mail, you could be illegal as far as they know. Or probably care.
I think some of the Canadian embassies in Gulf states need to see you've been there legally before they can issue your PR visa, but I guess that's a local arrangement.

If you lost it or it was nicked, then the replacement would be issued in Ottawa...so it doesnt necessarily prove anything.

Well, in the sense that a visitors visa is a form of residency, yes. The OH will very soon have been here three years on a mixture of visitor visa and study permits, so far as the publican, the tradesmen, the credit card companies are concerned, she's resident and she has renewed her (non UK) passport here. Still, so far as the government is concerned, she's not resident because she's not permanently resident.

Neither gets you healthcare. Children get a place in the school system here even if their parents are completely undocumented.
