PS: I can give you the name of a really good agent if you're thinking of buying when you get there.

North of the QEW is more typical of the racial mix found elsewhere in the GTA. They even let in dark people.
Here are some of the pettier Oakville by-laws. No third-party advertising billboards. No drying of laundry in the garden. No falling off the bridge by the marina (I kid you not; there is a sign forbidding it).

I will defiantly be looking to buy once I arrive, I will be looking for a home for me and a couple of investment properties. MLS is great for the home for me, but I would be looking for a fixer upper to do up then rent out as an investment, if you man can help with that it would be great.
As an general question non house purchase, the realtor you select can they work outside their area, so if I found a realtor in Oakville that I liked and got on with, would they be able to help with purchases of property in say Hamilton/Acton?

I don't think there is anything to stop realtors from working outside their own little area. When we sold our house in Oakville, the buyer and his agent were from Mississauga. You might find it a little difficult to get one to go as far as Hamilton. It would depend on how busy they are and how much money they stand to make out of you. You'd have to ask.
If you're looking at an investment property in Oakville, I would suggest that you give some consideration to the area around Sheridan College. Lots of students. I also think the Kerr Street area is a good long-term bet. It's in the old part of town but currently a bit seedy (by Oakville standards, anyway). It is, however, starting be be gentrified.
It's probably better to wait until you're closer to making the move before you start talking to people but I can put you in touch with a good realtor. I also know lots of people in the building trades in Oakville (mostly Brits), plus a few guys that are very much into the investment property lark. I'm sure they'd give you a few tips over a beer.
