The truth for me is I'd also quite like to go back plus I want to feel really important going through the priority queue (sorry, line up) for the security check when I travel by air within Canada! S |

Edit: At first I showed the officer our NEXUS cards but he wanted to see the passports. So I'd say the Super Visa trumps the NEXUS card. |

The last time we landed in Toronto from the UK...immigration officers asked to see all passengers passports as soon as we got off the plane. Seeing my US passport he asked if we were transiting to the US. I told him no...we were living in Toronto. He asked what visa we had and asked to see it. I told him we lived in Toronto on the Super Visa. He was obviously impressed...as he wished us good day without looking at our passports or the SV paperwork.

We were both civil servants and we both had to be "briefed" and "debriefed" - as well as technically needing permission. (we wouldn't want government secrets about social security falling into the wrong hands ) Upon arrival in Leningrad all passengers were in the immigration line then they opened another booth and we were both directed over to it. Exactly the same thing happened on departure from Moscow airport. Not quite the same as feeling important but certainly singled out. |
Re: NEXUS card
Back when I was at the airline, the airport where we had our hub, when coming back from Mexico, Customs and Immigration would let anyone with an airline ID use the crew line, never a wait, off the plane and in the terminal in under 5 minutes generally......
No idea if they still allow that, a good 13 years since I work for one.....

Re: NEXUS card
Surprisingly Canadian customs was a breeze last night, I was through in 5 mins. Even with declared food ! They just asked what it was, gave me a fancy stamp and said OK you are good to go. The passport machines were fine and I noticed they now include US passport holders, and YYZ has finally divided the immigration queue into "Canadian residents and American passports" and "Everyone else" ... All in all a good experience, I even lost my declaration card and besides having to wait in line for 20 minutes behind some random guy who decided cardboard boxes were a good idea to put on the plane with his stuff (he had like 5 boxes ) for customs to sort out, the guy was friendly and just swiped my passport and said good to go. Hats off to CBSA for that one
I am off to Niagara/Fort Erie for my interview tomorrow, will let everyone know how it goes ! |
Re: NEXUS card
Funny thing happened on the plane, there was an Albanian chap beside me who didn't speak much English, and was having a considerable amount of trouble with his declaration card understandably. So thankfully opposite me was an Albanian lady who did speak English, and between the two of us we were able to get his card filled out as well as proofread hers and the Albanian lady behind her
I do wonder if he actually got let into the country as he was planning on coming for 3 months.... The thing just stank of "I am going to work illegally for 3 months" seeing as he must have had to quit his job in Albania to come over for 3 months, so question of how he is supporting himself while he was here would have came up. Like one of those Border episodes on TV. As for the Albanian english speaking lady, she ended up beside me in one of the passport machines and realised she had filled out an American declaration card, not a Canadian, so had to start fresh. I guess the stewardess handed her an American card since she had a US passport out when she was handing the cards out. |
Re: NEXUS card
Cardboard boxes are a popular form of suitcases in parts of the world.
We had a flight in the evening that connected to a flight to Manilla and 90% or more of the passengers stuff that was checked were card board boxes with rope tied around it.

Re: NEXUS card
Fast panicked question before I go - they aren't going to issue me with a ridiculously short validity card and require me to renew all over again just because I turn 18 in Jan. right?

I think you're having last minute nerves and all will be OK. Looking forward to your update tomorrow. Is Mother Gozit going along too? |

As far as Im aware it will be for the 5 years so you are getting a deal as once you have turned 18 and then apply you would pay the $50. Gotta wear your big boy pants now. |

Re: NEXUS card
Yay!! Interview is done, everything good to go. They did ask me for both passports, so noting my Maltese citizenship was the correct thing to do.
Now, in GOES it still lists my old Canadian passport, even though I got it renewed since my original application and the new one is what was scanned today at the interview. Should I go ahead and update to my new Canadian passport in GOES?? Would doing so affect use of Global Entry? (It shouldn't since the new passport is what they scanned today at the interview right?) Niagara falls/Ft Erie centre was very easy to get to, take QEW towards Niagara and get off at very last exit, turn right and immediately left into the centre. I think they were a little weirded out that I was the only one in the family applying, and the US guy didn't seem to like that I don't travel to the US often, but it was fine in the end. |
