Iaink,

I think I stopped listening to new music (rock, I mean) after New Model Army or thereabouts. Bought an Oasis CD as a friend insisted I should listen to them. Wasn't very impressed. Maybe I should try listening to them again, but...

So mix is right up your street then, not much released since 1978 makes it onto the playlist around here

Excerts from the lyric:

"Every good gold digger's
Gonna wind up there
Every Playboy bunny
With her bleach blond hair"

"Get a front door key to the Playboy mansion
Gonna date a centerfold that loves to
Blow my money for me
(So how you gonna do it?)"

the references to Playboy and centrefolds advance a misogynistic view of women as being the playthings of men, this is consistent with their choice of "wife beater" clothing. It seems to me that the use of the first person conveys the view on the part of the lyricist that he will be the one dominating the women (one may make a corrolary here with the work of Curtis "50 cent" Jackson).

The reference to gold digging and blowing money suggests that the women are complicit in this view and, while stopping short of overt prostitution, are content to trade favours for financial benefits. We may see the choice of the word "blow" as a not quite overt statement of the nature of the relationship (let me know if you like me to expand on this point - I can hardly help it anyway).

The final line quoted may refer to the manner of spending money but, in this context, I think it fair to assume that the "it" referred to is the act of coitus. We could confirm that by looking for dribbling spittle when the "singer" delivers the line. All in all then we have a juvenile fantasy delivered with great pomposity by leather clad men with a swagger reminiscent of a pitcher scratching his nuts.

I suggest that there would be irony, as in an incongruity between the spoken and the actual, if they were, in fact, a bunch of flaming faggots.

One of my best friends saw Floyd, The Who and many others when he was studying in Sheffield, back in the sixties, when their gigs were at college halls. Think he qualifies as ancient, right? BTW, he's Canadian, raised in Scotland, spent his late teens in England and ended up here when he was in his forties (I guess). But we have a friend in common (also Canadian and also living here) who believes he's a vampire. I used to agree with that until he started working for a major corporate communications company at "almost" regular hours (in the past, he used to wake up only after the sun disappeared and used to go to bed before dawn)...

Never got into punk rock myself - maybe I didn't try very hard...

Ah....you need post-rock. Oasis and the like will cure nothing.

May I introduce you to Godspeed You ! Black Emperor et al. Now sadly defunct, possibly temporarily, they have many a spin off and derivative. Canadian, too, which is nice. The dark black underground, not the plaid-clad AOR overground.

Some people just analyze everything to death. I don't see the reason why. I see it on a daily basis when dealing with fans of my clients.

"Isn't this lyric about so and so"

"This must be about drugs"

"This certainly means...."

It's music. It is meant to be entertainment. There is no reason to go all ga-ga and pick everything apart. It's not like any song lyric is meant to be world class poetry. Sometimes there is a srious message in there. Sometimes the lyric is just written to create a controversy so the (insert band name) gets talked about in press and on the internet

On the other hand - dbd33 must know Nickelback very well considering the ability to qoute and then go in to an in depth analysis of the content.

I work in the business and can honestly not care less if an artist is gay, lesbian, transsexual, straight, left wing, right wing, atheist, christian, jewish.... you get the pic. If the music is good, the performance is good it's just good.

Having said that, I don't condone neo-nazi music, I refuse to buy any compilation CD that contain Gary Glitter songs and there are aspects of Marilyn Manson I just can't stand.

Then again, when he was confronted during an interview if he really believed everything he's been saying in the past all he did was smile and say "If it sells records." That man may or may not be a total nut-case but he sure is one heck of a marketing guy.

I must say that I've recently gotten in to Muse. I'd never thought I'd say that.

I also never thought I'd say I'm a total fan of Tool. But I am.

Is that irony, claiming not to condone neo-nazi music and endorsing Rush on the same thread?

I know Nickleback because they are cancon. Also Celine Dion, the bratty girl from near Belleville and Nellie Furtado.

I used to find her songs quite jolly but she gets on my tits now. It was the spitting that put me off, she spits in such an affected po-mo kind of way.
