"I wanna be great like Elvis without the tassels
Hire eight body guards that love to beat up assholes
Sign a couple autographs
So I can eat my meals for free
I think I'm gonna dress my ass
with the latest fashion
Get a front door key to the Playboy mansion
Gonna date a centerfold that loves to
blow my money for me"
is worthy of Rush.

That is, quite genuinely, the first time I've heard the idea that Canadians have irony. Are you saying that the lyric doesn't mean what it says? Are Nickleback actually gay? I find that very hard to believe; I think they're simple minded literalists and anyway, just look at them!

I loath the lyrics because, in the rare instances that they make any sense at all, they espouse the philosophy of the neo-facist Ayn Rand. They seem to me to be abhorent people with a gross inflated opinion of themselves, besides which their brand of pomp rock is tedious in the extreme.
Where are you on ELP, Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep?

). Still, can't help but love them. Sorry, but they rock!
Well, none of my friends back then were into ELP, so, I sort of skipped that class. Used to listen a bit of Jethro Tull and just a wee of UH.
What about Zappa, Beatles, Metallica, Iron Maiden and Ozzy (pre-The Osbournes)?

And for lyrics, just check out some of David Coverdale's stuff, or Beatles (argh! I'm bashing the crown jewel of British musical heritage!). Even ABBA's swedish lyrics were quite simple.
Americans do the same. Britney Spear "baby hit me one more time" comes to mind.
Oh wait! That hit song was written by a swede.

Seen the 'Tull' in concert 3 times over the years. (& I'm probably about your age as opposed to dbd33 who is ancient). Last time was at the Brentwood Centre (this is all in the UK) which was a bit of a drop down from the rock festivals they used to play. Damn good though.

They sing about wanting access to the Playboy mansion. That suggests a seventies style machoism, think David Hasselhof, which if they were gay would be both ironic and cutely camp. I don't think they're ironic though, I think they're from the middle of nowhere, grew up listening to their parent's Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath records and now really want to be Gene Simmons circa 1978.
