Plainly you're another one who didn't grow up with English.

Sign a couple autographs

Actually, I did. I grew up tri-lingual. Sadly forgotten one.

As for the lyrical quote - there is a difference between UK and Canadian irony ;-)

That is, quite genuinely, the first time I've heard the idea that Canadians have irony. Are you saying that the lyric doesn't mean what it says? Are Nickleback actually gay? I find that very hard to believe; I think they're simple minded literalists and anyway, just look at them!

Where are you on ELP, Jethro Tull and Uriah Heep?
Agree with you as far as Ayn Rand is concerned, but when I started listening and getting hooked to Rush, I was a teenager (not too much upstairs... hmm... actually, lots of weird things upstairs... ). Still, can't help but love them. Sorry, but they rock!

Well, none of my friends back then were into ELP, so, I sort of skipped that class. Used to listen a bit of Jethro Tull and just a wee of UH.

What about Zappa, Beatles, Metallica, Iron Maiden and Ozzy (pre-The Osbournes)?

The Canadians I know do.

As I don't know them I would not be able to tell if they are gay or not. Besides, what does that have to do with anything?

And for lyrics, just check out some of David Coverdale's stuff, or Beatles (argh! I'm bashing the crown jewel of British musical heritage!). Even ABBA's swedish lyrics were quite simple.

Americans do the same. Britney Spear "baby hit me one more time" comes to mind.

Oh wait! That hit song was written by a swede.

Ps. Moderator: I think we need to move this thread to the maple leaf forum or at least split it and change the topic on it.

Seen the 'Tull' in concert 3 times over the years. (& I'm probably about your age as opposed to dbd33 who is ancient). Last time was at the Brentwood Centre (this is all in the UK) which was a bit of a drop down from the rock festivals they used to play. Damn good though.

I know of the Beatles but think them overrated. I don't think I've heard any of the others since, wow, since the seventies.

They sing about wanting access to the Playboy mansion. That suggests a seventies style machoism, think David Hasselhof, which if they were gay would be both ironic and cutely camp. I don't think they're ironic though, I think they're from the middle of nowhere, grew up listening to their parent's Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath records and now really want to be Gene Simmons circa 1978.

The joy of being ancient is that I saw Jethro Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP and many other dinosaur bands but cleansed myself with "Anarchy in the UK".

Apart from ELP, same here.

Never got in to punk though. However, Sex Pistols today is more classic rock than punk, really.

My point is - what does sexual preferences have to do with anything?
