Probably a sign of terminal career decline:) (Avril Lavigne, global superstar, that is.) |

An excellent piece of work on the subject is 'Lament for an Ocean' by Michael Harris. Be careful it might challenge some of your preconceptions which is always a bit painful. 'Frinstance you believe that the fact that the DFO scientists/officials are from the Maritimes mean they cant be impartial. In actuality most of the science and policy comes from Ottowa, that well know Maritime City and a common point of view amongst Maritimers is that Ottowa sells them out for larger geopolitical gain. (selling grain to the Russians, buying airbuses for Air Canada etc etc). The truth as ever lies somewhere in between.
One thing that I can say is that the fishing industry, including the seal hunt is a vital part of the economy of a very rural province. Even with its decline since the cod moratorium of 92. Taking part of that away because its not politically correct to kill defenseless and cute animals for their fur/meat/oil just doesnt sit well with me. |

There are lots for foreign celebrites who have homes in Canada.

Having celebrites being photographed with seals that aren't being culled is done as a publicity stunt to raise money and nothing more. Surely you are smart enough to understand this. The McCartney affair lacks sincerity. |

In slaughter houses, the cattle/hogs get a pin through the skull, but is that any better than clubbing in your opinion? |

Just seem interesting that so many "famous canadians" dont call canada home, but I guess that all work in the US, and its not like many UK stars dont bugger off somewhere with better weather and lower taxes too. |

Not sure how short term thinking is a factor in the specific matter of the seal hunt. Seals have been hunted for centuries and populations by all accounts are healthy. Your argument appears to be around the clubbing and that this is inhumane. (incidentally how can something be inhumane if its not being done to humans but I digress......). If clubbing kills as swiftly as say shooting then doesnt that rather defuse your argument? |
