An excellent piece of work on the subject is 'Lament for an Ocean' by Michael Harris. Be careful it might challenge some of your preconceptions which is always a bit painful. 'Frinstance you believe that the fact that the DFO scientists/officials are from the Maritimes mean they cant be impartial. In actuality most of the science and policy comes from Ottowa, that well know Maritime City and a common point of view amongst Maritimers is that Ottowa sells them out for larger geopolitical gain. (selling grain to the Russians, buying airbuses for Air Canada etc etc). The truth as ever lies somewhere in between.
One thing that I can say is that the fishing industry, including the seal hunt is a vital part of the economy of a very rural province. Even with its decline since the cod moratorium of 92. Taking part of that away because its not politically correct to kill defenseless and cute animals for their fur/meat/oil just doesnt sit well with me. |

You are coy about your nationality and location. However with your oh so well observed comments on Newfoundland are you Margaret Wente? About my "coyness," I will give my nationality and location at some point. My only reluctance in doing so is that I don't want to be stereotyped. I will say that I don't really identify with a nationality. I think it can limit one's perspective. |

Why do you think people work for animal welfare groups? You surely can't believe its for the big bucks. Maybe everyone isn't cynical. Is that possible? Having celebrites being photographed with seals that aren't being culled is done as a publicity stunt to raise money and nothing more. Surely you are smart enough to understand this. The McCartney affair lacks sincerity. |

Didnt the australians decide that clubing was the humaine way to deal with the cane toad problem. Club em and then freeze them to death.
Wy is clubing thought to be inhumaine or third world in some way? Thats just a preconception. Is shooting any better? Probably more dangerous as any missed shots run the risk of injuring a nearby animal, which could result in longer term suffering, starvation etc etc. At least with a club theres not a lot of room for doubt, and its not like this is you or I doing this in some half arsed way, these people do this for a living, often under the glare of international scrutiny. I agree that increased education and alternate careers for the people in these areas would help, but it cant make a difference overnight, and the situation there is pretty grim. http://www.cdli.ca/cod/histor10.htm |

Other options (apart from EI) are few and far between. Moving to Fort McMurray is a popular one. |
Re: McCartney / Seal Cull
Did anyone say Shania?
How many of these canadians actually live in Canada though? Gordon does I think?...erm, any more? Most of them go to the US or switzerland or whereever as soon as practically possible Do the Wilkinsons count as famous? they are around here, and just moved back to the area from nashville. Probably a sign of terminal career decline:) |
