I don't know that this holds in a military context, Generals Patton and Schwartzkopf are famous braggarts but surely not cowards.

Really ? Maybe BE is remotely civilised but humanity is an apalling cesspit of greed, nastiness, anger, cruelty and sickness.
I'm all for seeing the good in people, but it pays (in terms of caution an self-preservation) to see the bad too.
