Re: Mail on Sunday

It was a comparison of the treatment of fallen service personnel in Canada against the UK.

I don't normally buy any paper let alone the Mail but saw the front page and had to take a copy home to show the missus. It said a lot to me about some of the differences between the countries.

Cheers
Tom

hmmm i dont buy the mail but saw this headline in a dumped basket in the aisle of Tesco this am. Went to buy one and most papers were there but all the mail had gone! (so someone likes the mail) so retraced my steps to the aisle of the abandon basket and took it. Felt so sorry then for families of the British lads.

I viewed this article on the mail on sunday website and was appalled by what I read and saw. Having lived in Canada for 18 months, I can compare the 2 countries from experience and Canada wins hands down in the way people treat each other and for the way of life. Britain certainly needs to 'wake up' and realise that those in power are not worth anyones time as they treat the ordinary citizen with contempt and those who gave the greatest sacriface deserve much much more.

You should hear some of the comments sent into a local radio station here last remembrance day - so shameful, I can't even bring myself to quote them.... an absolute outrage and totally disgusting!

It's a school holiday and even in the smallest villages and smallest memorials they have parades and salutes. Tv comes live form Vimy Ridge and lost Canadians are honoured all day. My Dad is 80, a WWII vet and I wish he was able to come and see it.

Re: Mail on Sunday

The Remembrance Day service in the kids' school was a real eye-opener as to the differences between the way the British and Canadians honour their fallen.

All through the week before, they had been studying about the wars and hearing stories about Vimy Ridge etc. Then they had a service which included a video presentation and they had a veteran come and talk to them.

All very different to their school in the UK, where Remembrance Day passed virtually unnoticed - apart from younger son making pictures of poppies but not knowing why they had done it.

I found it very emotional and felt ashamed really that the UK lost so many more men in both wars, but don't honour them in anywhere near the same way as the Canadians.

Re: Mail on Sunday

After the service at the school I actually sent an email to my mum telling her all about it and how different it was to the UK.

Unknown to me, she printed off my email and took it in to the local paper, as they had been having lots of debates in the letters page about how the Remembrance Day was not celebrated properly in our home town. The email was printed in the paper under a heading about how differently Canada remembers its war heroes.

I was embarrassed about it when she told me and sent it to me, because if I had known I was going to go into print, I would have worded it a bit better - it was full of "and then......" all the way through! I'll never make a journalist!!

Ya all that fuss - but Canada doesn't have a vile snivelling grinning idiotic self serving war criminal as recent ex-Premier.

So there's bound to be less national shame and general social angst

It seems to be the common theme - UK has so much shame, disgrace, stress, angst, disappoinment, etc.
