Hey, we as a society voted for the politicians who put them in harms way, so yes, we put them there, and yes, we do owe them.

I get so pissed off when people misdirect their anger at the soldiers...the soldiers dont decide where they are deployed, thats a political decision, and rightly or wrongly as a society we cant avoid the blame for the politicians we elect.

Sometimes the guy you vote for gets in, sometimes its the other side, but the majority always has the last say, and the people in the armed forces dont get to leave just because they dont like the leadership, so the least we can do is take good care of them when they pay the price for us.

They arent really in a position to deal with normal people when incapacitated by their injuries and post traumatic shock....I think that was the whole point...

I, like LiffyB, am the wife of a serving member of the armed forces. I am just totally speechless! This is one of the reasons my very patriotic OH has decided enough is enough! He is leaving the military 4 years early! not because he doesn't want to go to war anymore (he is currently serving his notice but has still volunteered to go) but because he is sick of being treated like crap by this Country (and by that I don't mean the majority of us! I mean the idiots who are supposed to be running this country). I worked in an IT Dept and the most Junior analysts started on the same amount of pay as he receives now after giving 18yrs of his life. I don't support the war but I will always be here for any serviceman/woman, It's just so sad to see that even after giving their lives we can't give them a heroes return.

As it's been pointed out, most people don't think they're doing anything particularly heroic. Junior IT analysts probably have slightly more specialised skills than being able to shoot someone.

"most people" Bazzz? Have you started speaking for the great unwashed masses now?

Sure, perhaps most people dont agree with the reason the troops are there and think they should withdraw, but I dont think that translates to most people not recognising a level of heroism from those who are standing in harms way anyway.

I know your M.O. around here is to be an agent provocateur, but this is really not the time or the place if you ask me, its in particularly poor taste, more so than usual.

I think that's a stretch. People volunteer for a job pursuing the foreign policy aims of the government, they're not conscripts defending homeland but adventurers abroad. I have some sympathy for the Canadian forces as they doubtless expected to be peacekeepers but people joining the British or US armies has no reason to think they would be doing anything of value. They're getting what they might reasonably have expected, a short lived career fighting a losing battle in a sunny country. I'm indifferent to them doing it and certainly don't feel I owe them anything.

I don't imagine they do but I expect there are some common themes, interest in physical activity, valuing the company of one's own sex, a desire to travel, a desire to acquire a trade and/or to have one's education financed, a love of ceremony, a desire for structure and routine. The reason people join the armed forces has little to do with whether or not the public should value their role; doctors aren't less valuable if they're greedy and lawyers are not defensible if they're well meaning.

can this thread be binned please. i think its been generally more insulting than any lack of respect shown by the British government. I shall refrain from commenting further, i think more than enough has been said already. some people on here really need to think about what they say.
