in which case you would have to live in Toronto (according to dbd33) as that is the only place in Canada where anyone can live without a car ;)

Now you are just being silly - you've been preoccupied with moving to Canada for years, you can't pull out now! Just wait for the rate to recover a bit before paying off the bridging loan and get yourself a dirt-cheap redneck pick-up truck instead of fancy SUV you were hoping for

Fancy SUV? I had my mind on a 1992 Honda Civic, looks like it'll be a 1987 model now.

I was thinking of you this morning when I saw the rate go below $2.05 :frown: I just cannot believe that it has dropped so much in the last week or so. It was hovering at around $2.12 for a few months and now it just seems to have collapsed. If it goes below $2 it will be a first since August 2006.

If you want my opinion I'd just resign yourself to letting the house in Canada fall through and stick it out in the UK until yours is sold and the rate picks up again. Every 1c drop makes a huge difference to your lifestyle over here and when you are earning a Canadian wage every penny counts.

Can you dig holes? I hear that the mining trade pays extremely well up north :) Keep your chin up and don't even think of pulling out of Canada *altogether* now.

keep positive steve, the rate will go back up just give it a few days, once the Northern rock debacle starts sorting itself out the rate will bounce back

Not sure what "or else" is, but I bet it isn't pretty.

I hope that you are right Steve. I need to transfer the deposit for the purchase of my new home. We close on October 16th. Does anyone know how long it would take to transfer the funds via HiFx?

I've done it twice and it's been the same day. As long as the funds are in their account.

Hi Steve666,

My funds are kept in a HSBC account in the UK. You think it would only take 1 day for them to transfer into a Canadian account.

Your advice is appreciated.

Unfortunately Benjy i don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you which way it is going to go. I know people are getting close to having to send money over but try not to panic the rate has dropped low before, admittadley not this low, but still down. i would suggest give it as long as you can. 2.15 is the normal average rate, so i feel it will go back up

regards

steve

I have used HIFX twice and took 3 to 4 days both times. Longest delay seems to be the transfer from my HSBC account to HIFX, and then it went from HIFX to my RBC account same day.
