Do you think you've not actually left the uk for good and this is just a long trip away from home?
I see from your sig and they way you refer to the uk as home maybe you're in the wrong mindset from the off ?
Maybe try and think as canada being your home now?
i cant imagine what your going through as we've yet to make the move ourselves but the way you describe it reminds me of the way i used to feel on a long deployment...

I do wonder exactly when that change took place ... I think she said it was as they landed, but it has to go further back than that .......

There presumably was some point when she did think it was the thing to do though, as they'd been working on coming for two years!
It took us two years to get here, having decided to do it, and I remember that the latter period is when the doubts might kick in, even though we had visited the once (as tourists) ..... and for us it helped to actually come over and plan places to live, talk to job prospects etc., and rekindle our enthusiasm .... obviously they didn't feel they could afford to do that, but in the end it has cost them a whole lot more anyway.
How important are research trips? I'd say vital! .... for all sorts of reasons, this included. I know it seems like a lot of money, but think of it as an investment, or even insurance.

im going to miss all of my friends and family, some more than others...!
im going to be spending the first 6 months concentrating on my training so my mind will be occupied my other half might have to spend quite a bit on her own which will be worse for sure, just hope she can find a job soon to keep her mind busy too, which i think might be the key to unlock the pain.
when i get those im i doing the right thing thoughts i usually get the dvd out i made of of research trip.... 10 mins of that im and usually right back there !

DON;T give up yet.My son was classed as gifted in the UK ,he has been at school 2 and half weeks is being assessed and falls into the same bracket here, you need to push things, get the kids having playdates and sleepovers, think about the grim and grime ,the dirty streets,ASBOs ,hoodies etc etc,go and have a walk on your own look and the countryside yes you could be in Scotland but does it equate to where you came from,I doubt it,have you had any emails from home what are they saying same old ,samel old!!!!!!!!

In 1989 I left to study in Belarus (Ex-Soviet Union) and it was my first trip abroad. I felt like I came to another planet. everything was different. at the begining, it was a bit interesting as I was discovering this new culture but after a couple of months, panic started and I wanted a reason to go back home but I couldn't live with the idea that I may regret leaving later on. My father advised me to keep myself busy and not to think about it and it really worked. I spent seven years and went back home with a Master degree, a lovely wife and a two years old son.
I can't imagine what would be my life by now if I gave up and went back home. In March, I will complete my seven's year working in Kuwait and hopefully I will get my PR visa and leave to Vancouver by June 2009 to start a new chapter in my life.
I'm also terrified about the move to Vancouver (with four kids now) and I'm confident that my first year will be difficult. You may find me on this forum complaining but my advise to you is HANG ON. For your sake and for the sake of your kids. I'm sure you will find a way to make your life easier.
I see on this forum an endless support from different people who advised and will advise you how to go thru this experience. try to benefit from our experts experience and you can make it.
All the best and keep us updated.
