Following on from the earlier post about the average salary I dont understand how people can say you need to be earning 80,000 CAD in Britian after having had reduced hours to earning more than double in Canada is the cost of living that high???

This article (clicky) suggests that you should take your UK salary in £s and multiply that figure by 1.8 which then would serve as a guide to how many Canadian $s it would take per month to achieve the same standard of living e.g.:

£2500 (month/UK) x 1.8 = $4500 (Month/Canada)

Perhaps others can confirm how accurate this is

It all depends on where exactly in Canada you are moving to, home much money you are bringing over with you & finally your households need and/or wants in life.

For the average 2.4 children household (as the old saying goes) going to Calgary with NO money in your pocket on 80,000 would be incredibly tight I am guessing.

Take that same person to Winnipeg they wouldn't be 'ballers' but they wouldn't really be in trouble either.

I do apologise for my lack of punctuation but I am on a phone!! Others seemed to not have a problem!! We would be coming to Edmonton, we have just been doing price comparisons between uk and Canada and for 90% of things Canada always comes up cheaper!

If you substitute the words "more expensive" for "cheaper" you will get to closer to the reality. Especially at exchange rates of the last few years.

In general, Canada to me seems more expensive (admittedly I have not lived in the UK for a while).

It depends - is the best answer you will get!

Personally moving with nothing in my pocket I wouldn't want to be in edmonton unless I/my household made 90k/year.

Goes on price comparison website (IMO those things are useless cos they only talk about price, not LIFESTYLE. it's not just how much things cost but how you use them etc).

Most things other than cheese, bread and beer seem cheaper to me. Though it was more obviously so when the pound was at $2.15, not $1.50.

How about $2.60 in 1999...Canada was cheaper back then. In the long term $2.00 is a good and convenient number to consider for CAD/GBP. It certainly won't stay below $1.60 forever, but given the current crop of British politicians, it might be there for a while.

When the same topic comes up over and over, you sometimes need to be a bit more specific to avoid the ire of regulars.

So what kind of things are you noticing that are cheaper? Keep in mind there are "hidden" costs too, like sales tax. And for restaurants, the expectation of larger tips (I used to multiply a menu price by 1.3X to get true cost of the item). Petrol is less expensive (but engines and distances are greater). Cheese (if you can call it that) is expensive. Give some examples and the forum will guide you...!
