They said exactly the same in Winter 02/03... I found it slightly alarming at the time that we were only 50 miles or so away from the coldest place on earth at that particular moment... but I guess since they said 1966 in that article I must have dreamt it... or maybe they reprint it on any 'no-news day' lol.

skiing at -15c the other day i got so hot i had to take my ski jacket off..

id take minus 40 and dry and sunny here any day over 0c and raining in the UK..
We live in Newfoundland and find it pretty similar here too....when our friends and family ask we tell them that when it's minus 10 here it's like +5 or 6 there. We can get away with fleece, hat and gloves where as in UK you'd have t-shirt, fleece, big coat, hat and gloves on.....so what are they on about....Over here it's a dry cold and in UK it's wet

The coldness has knocked them for six and they were totally unprepared for this level of coldness. they have no car yet so maybe this is adding to their woes. Personally I think they should have visited Canada first, and during different seasons to see if it was suited to them.

Ironically I have only visited Canada during the summer and the last time there was a heatwave and even mosquitoes were buzzing around. I remember actually appreciating the man made Wasaga beach where I took a dip to cool off even though the water was grey it felt good !!

Anyway it is their choice, though I did suggest to them to maybe stick it out a bit longer and see how things are when it gets a bit warmer.
Just a quick one my son started kindergarden out here in Canada when he was still 4 he turned five during the first semester, it's one year behind uk next year at age 5-6 he'll start grade 1, but I must admit the schooling out here is way above the schooling in UK our son learns more at kindergarden than his 2 older brother did in year 1 in UK. He leaves on the bus for kindergarden at 0800 and returns home at 1145 which isn't alot but I think it's ample with the learning that takes place there.

Just thought I'd add this point if they are interested

According to the radio news this morning we hit -54C wind-chill last night; must have been while I was asleep, because it didn't go below -53C while I was watching the weather on the web .

We were talking to one of the checkout people at the local supermarket at the weekend, and she said they'd had supply problems because some trucks couldn't get there in the weather we were having.

I think it was late January or early February before temperatures got so low last year.

I'm curious - whereabouts in NL do you live? Here on the North-East Avalon its very often a damp kind of cold! Granted, generally I find it worse in the 'spring' in April/May at 2-5C with RDF than -5c in the winter. One of the joys of this place is not having to cope with -40C or indeed +40C in the summer!

I must admit we had a real cold snap for a few days in January last year here in Alberta, i seem to remember -40 with a -48 windchill......i did not go out that week being the chicken that i am. Most of the time it was around -19 and we found that ok to cope with. This winter has hit me harder though, and i have felt it a lot more.......it has been colder though and temps went to - really quickly this time. They are starting to crawl their way back up again, who knows for how long......we still had snow in April last year, and talking to locals, they have seen last snows in May and first snow in July.........

Don't get me wrong, i really do feel for them, to give up a dream after a month in MY eyes is mad, maybe they need some support, some help.
I have a little one who is 4yrs, but they have got kindergarten in september and then full time school the year after, they need to accept that this is the way that it is done and get on with it, canada is not england, thank goodness

I find having kids at different ages help, i was down at the school board earlier registering my little one, they gave me loads of stuff for her and talked to her about daycare and groups, they was awesome
Maybe advise your friend to search out some centres so that they dont feel alone or point them here, we are friendly and can help solve any problems that they have or help in other ways..................

Hope they find there solution soon
