It was a major consideration for us when we purchased our present home in 1987.

Ah but having lived in London where it was a struggle to park the car on a street anywhere near my house and my neighbours seemed to compete to deny me a space... having a drive and double garage is BLISS! Also when it snows or freezes, a heated garage avoids the need for a <whisper it> block heater....

I don't think that front garages are a uniquely Calgary phenonomen though?

All the hideous new estates that are blighting the UK have more than their fair share of houses with a garage where the front room ought to be.

But the garage needn't be attached to the front of the house.:sneaky:

Actually a "heated" garage opens you up to a host of other possible automotive problems.:p

I totally disagree with the cold weather killing the community during winter. I've had some great chats with the neighbours while shovelling the driveway (which I actually enjoy...good exercise!) and met several of our neighbours we'd never even seen before when we all helped to give someone a push when their car got stuck in the snow on our street. I also get together at a friends for outdoor hockey nights. He has a TV set up in his yard and we sit round the fire, wrapped up and enjoy some frozen beers and hockey. ALSO...try going to an outdoor rink after 7pm on a cold winters night. It's really social and a great atmosphere with parents and kids out skating...even if you just want to get out and chat with people etc.

The key is you need to actually make the effort to make winter enjoyable or you'll be destined to six months in front of the TV or walking around malls.

(Agree with the drive-in garages though. Not very sociable)

i've been here 3 years almost to the day, but i would have had 2nd thoughts if i known what (and how long) the winters were like

These are fair and valid points. This sort of post is, I think, more valuable to folks deciding on a potential move than the "can't wait for the winter, snow, yipee!" type stuff.

I live in Edmonton, and pretty much find the same. I walk my dog every day during the winter and some weeks you could go for a couple of days with out seeing anyone else walking in the "river valley", and I'm in the middle of the city - pretty bleak.

How did I know, you'd be posting in your usual negative manner and taking the opportunity to whine about Edmonton AGAIN.

Do yourself (and us) a favour and fork off back to blighty
