Not much downhill skiiing or snopwboarding in each place though is there! How many would move to Vancouver if they had a well paying oil industry job waiting for them there I wonder..... You can still ski and snowboard living in coastal BC, but it seldom gets below zero in your back yard. You can live in montreal or Ottawa and ski and snowboard fairly easily too come to think of it. I wouldn't! Too many people, too many cars, too many bridges (to create traffic jams), too much rain and grey skies (I'd rather have snow and blue skies!), too crowded, too many taxes! Montreal! Meh - truly miserable winters - my parents live there so I get to hear all about it! And you've got to drive quite far to get decent ski hills. Ottawa - not known as an international skiing destination:p! Lets not pretend that Calgary doesn't get pretty darn cold at times. :We're" not pretending! "We" said "we" survive! |

I have honestly felt colder in the UK because of the damp that seems to seep into your bones. Dec 2006 was in Edmonton on Business -10 (-24 with the wind chill), came back to Calgary -8 (-15 with the windchill) drove through to Seattle +3. Where did I 'feel' Colder, s'right fricking Seattle cos of the damn moisture in the air. The mutt rarely has issues going out here in Calgary regardless of how cold it gets (he sometimes doesnt like the 'heat' though), last weekend was in Portland where it was high teens but pissing down, he refused to go out (then again so did the OH) |

Yea but wouldnt you prefer the lovely sun you get in Calgary compared with the constant cold grey of Vancouver in winter? It may not drop below zero that much but its damp cold.

Re: Calgary winters.....brrrrr!!!
This one is turning into the old "you don't have to shovel rain" discussion.
My last job was split between Vancouver and Calgary - summer in both cities is really nice, then you get to choose between snow or rain in winter - I'd happily live in either. Get a job first, then work out if you can adapt to the weather - Canadian cities are geared up for their local climate. |

If in my work I had been transferred to Vancouver I would have made a life there. :) However having said that, after spending 45 years in Alberta I prefer the sun in winter to months of rain and overcast. |

Last year Vancouver was bitterly cold with lots of snow. I had to buy a fur hat and some really warm boots. Hoping they stay in the cupboard this winter.

I rather the rain, Than 5-6 months of shoveling the driveway and freezing cold day in and day out. High heating bills and slippery sliding everyone, with a massive of clothes.
Even in Ontario the snowfall is not even close to everyday...no one is shoveling their driveway "day in day out", and there is always the option to pay someone else to do snow clearance anyway. Heating bills in Calgary wont be significantly different to Ontario...less tax for starters, and quite probably more insulation too to compensate for the more extreme minimum temps. |

Yes - I wasn't impressed with the walk to work when it was -10; the snow looked nice though so I didn't mind too much. That weird temperature inversion that blanked out the sun seemingly forever did get rather annoying though.
