I cant make my wife or kids do anything:( #1 offspring is getting old enough now I guess, but she needs a poke with a cattle prod to get her out of bed at the best of times, so no danger of her clearing the drive first thing. Even major bribery probably wouldn't work. |
Re: Calgary winters.....brrrrr!!!
I thought most Canadians who have driveways have petrol powered snow blowers.

Its not every day though in Calgary...thats rather the point of the Chinook effect.
Even in Ontario the snowfall is not even close to everyday...no one is shoveling their driveway "day in day out", and there is always the option to pay someone else to do snow clearance anyway. Heating bills in Calgary wont be significantly different to Ontario...less tax for starters, and quite probably more insulation too to compensate for the more extreme minimum temps. |

That's why I encourage my kids to play the "let's shovel the driveway" game.
and then my eldest daughter managed to persuade the boys up the road to shovel our driveway when they were doing theirs  |

True e-nuff. But I was comparing to Vancouver and I was generalizing a bit. I think it silly when some said I prefer snow and freezing cold over a little bit of rain. Big deal. Snow is pain and you can died from it. Nobody has been rained to death nor die from the rain. Nor had heart attack from shoveling the rain. But AB and Ont you can died from a breakdown in the cold weather, Lots of people have drop dead from shoveling the driveways. I lived in Vancouver or Victoria if was cheap. But It's not it almost the price of London England. Plus I'm sorry I rather live there any day of the week over Van or Vic.
I do however have a woodstove and generator in case the grid fails me;) |

Thats you, others are different. I'll take my chances with the occasional snow and months of cold to avoid the grey winter skys and rain...had 28 years of that in the UK, and that was enough for my lifetime. Snow is still a novelty for me I guess.

As for leafless trees ... the answer is to plant evergreens. Nothing looks as good in winter as a pine tree with a nice coating of snow. |

[QUOTE=Essex_Man;7921141]It's funny you should say that. I never really found it like that. I never really noticed that it rain all the time. When I lived there until I was 27. My Memory was rain some of the time. But not all the time. The summers were nice and sunny too. Non of that high humidity that you get here sometimes. TO can be really humid. :)

Just because it is sunny doesn't make it warm. Sunny and snow it can still be freezing -35 outside. Snow is pain and you can died from it. Nobody has been rained to death nor die from the rain. Nor had heart attack from shoveling the rain. Nor does it rain 24/7. But AB and Ont and the rest of the other provinces you can died from a breakdown in the cold weather. Lots of people have drop dead from shoveling the driveways. I lived in Vancouver or Victoria if it was cheap. But It's not it almost the price of London England. I'm sorry I rather live in London any day of the week over Van or Vic. The point of living in Canada at least for me, is that it cheap, low crime and safe otherwise I be back in England. The only problem is, you've got to put up with the winters. It is the only thing that really sucks about Canada. Nobody really likes Winter. It's horrible on cars. Your Body. Their no leaves on the tree's and the streets are empty and everyone is hurry to get home and looks depressed. Yes I generalizing yet again. The point is the majority of people hate snowy freezing cold winters. It sucks. But it's the pay off for living in such a great country.
I love the fact the sun shines all winter- I have way more energy through the winter than I did in UK. Plus if we are talking health benefits I get more Vit D which has loads of benefits!!! At least Calgary has no earthquake risk................... |
