You just have to stay on here a while to realise who speaks rubbish and who doesn't! I am originally from Lincoln and now live in Halifax! When are you coming over?

Have also heard a few negative things about Cole Harbour.
Other than that, the rest of NS seems to be okay, although more rural living can have it's own problems.
I would agree, and add North Preston to the 'no go' list.

Well, who knows when we will get there? We are coming over in June for a holiday. Mark has a job which should start at the beginning of June, but we have to sell houses first!

Where abouts in Halifax have you moved to. When did you move over there?

Never forget the rough area in downtown Halifax - betwix Ahem Ave, Sackville St, Brunswick St and Rainnie Drive. The posse up on "the hill" identify themselves by dressing in drag. They pack more heat than a slow combustion stove. And, kid you not, I've seen a couple of light cannon slung about their ghetto. Talk about boyz-in-da-hood, this clan is one bunch of badass hombres .

I predict they will start shooting in about 22 minutes (I can see the flagpole from my office window) They haven't got me with a cannonball yet

That is simply not true.
Having recently returned from Calgary and Edmonton, they had much more of a safer feel than Liverpool and Manchester (for instance). Not just from a physical violence point of view, but the traffic is much safer to pedestrians.

We live in Clayton Park just about 10 mins from Halifax centre. We moved here in January 08 and are completely loving it - more so now the weather is so nice!

a good idea if you have kids is to check out the schools as you are zoned to a school, so depending where you stay will depend on the school
but dont let the things you read put you off. really nice areas outskirts of halifax. there are more pros than cons

Now listen, Val50 you wont get into the Spryfield Massive talking like that - that's not how we roll

Look you are safe as houses out in Spryfield as long as you follow one golden rule - avoid being shady when doing your drug deals, simple!

All joking aside as I can see some posters have no idea about any of us......yikes. I rent for now in Spryfield which has a historic bad rap, but is actually not bad at all, though the further you go along Herring Cove road the worse it looks and gets. But it isnt inner city London or Liverpool!

There are shaby looking areas and good and bad people doing what they do the world over. It doesnt take much to see which places are for you or not. And from what I understand, if there is an area you like the look of but want more info on, you can call the Police in that area and ask about crime local to there.

For me, there are some areas outside of Halifax that really ring my bell and others that leave me cold, but someone else would love. Those areas arent rough or horrible, but not ticking the boxes for me regarding views or just the looks of the place. Also the affordability of course! That is self limiting in our case, most definately.

So just come out, get a good realtor to show you round at your leisure and make sure you are happy that they are showing you an unbiased view of the areas. By that I mean, they dont just show you their listings, or favour an area because they saturate that area.............with one mind many people are knowing where I mean

Good luck!! And dont worry, no need for a bullet proof vest here.........tazer gun maybe.................and mace for the bears?

I agree if you have children check out the schools first and by that I mean talking to people that have grown up there. It is always a good idea to speak to the locals. Get to find out who and where the good teachers are.

dont get us wrong in us asking this, but we do not want to move to an area which has bad crime etc and schools not very good.

would not like ti find this sort of stuff out when we are there, rather know before hand

thank you

Any areas within the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) I'd avoid like the plague. Don't let the names Scarbourgh,Whitby, Ontario fool you. They are not like East coast Yorkshire. Ottawa is alright if you like inner city living.
