hi all

hopeing to get out to ns in june to look at areas that we might be interested in living etc, are there any area that we should avoid does anyone know.
dont get us wrong in us asking this, but we do not want to move to an area which has bad crime etc and schools not very good.

would not like ti find this sort of stuff out when we are there, rather know before hand

The core area "Downtown" of just about any major Canadian City.

Canada is no different in that respect to most of the World.

I'm sticking up for Downtowns! They can actually be a really great place to live depending on your circumstances. I've lived in downtown Calgary for nearly two years and in my experience it's a LOT different from other cities in other parts of the world and it's been nothing but a great experience. Crime isn't comparable to cities of a similar size back home and isn't generally a problem here at all. I've never felt safer walking around compared to other places I've been...especially the UK. This city is way safer than the village of 2000 people I lived in in Britain. You hear some ridiculous word-of-mouth stories about things that happen downtown that actually don't happen at all and always come from people who don't live downtown. There are homeless people, the odd hooker etc but that doesn't mean it's not safe for 'normal' people.

Avoid Kamloops, it has hot summers and mild winters.

They probably will manage to avoid Kamloops if they visit Nova Scotia......

I'm glad you live downtown and enjoy it. This is the biggest problem with most North American (not just Canadian) downtowns, people don't live in them anymore. No let me rephrase that, middle class Families don't live there anymore.

When you are young downtowns are great, but when you have kids, well.... lots/most people decide to move out to the burbs, where there are usually better schools without the gangsters you often find in the downtown schools.

So the downtown becomes an urban wasteland, you have the "young and hip" and the "poor and disenfranchised" and not a lot in between.

Paul .. it would have saved a great deal of effort had you used as your thread title 'areas to avoid in nova scotia' ... I was about to post until I realised you were thinking of ns (which is easy to miss in your sentence) and a province I am not familar with.

Maybe the moderator could do us all a favour by fixing the title. This way I figure you will get far more responses and more pertinent ones at that.

You probably want to steer clear of the North Shore; it tends to attract wankers.

north and central parts of Halifax don't have such a good reputation, especially around Gottingen Street. Fairview, Cowies Hill and Spryfield are also areas to avoid (sorry Poppy2) Downtown Dartmouth also seems to get it's fair share of murders, mostly seem to be drug related.
Have also heard a few negative things about Cole Harbour.
Other than that, the rest of NS seems to be okay, although more rural living can have it's own problems.

I'd say a great place to live in NS is Lunenberg - they have a fish museum, which is a great place to look at fish. They also have a nice boat in the harbor to look at if you'd like to look at a boat - it's called The Brownose.

Seriously - avoid the Cape Chignecto region; the poverty there is appalling (scenes reminiscent of Appalachian regions in USA).

Another slum area one should avoid is the bankrupt Pictou to Amherst region (actually, all the way up to Shediac in NB) - very hostile. After driving through this region my F-150 pickup was pock-marked with .22 slugs and plugged with crossbow bolts - had to pick them out with needle-nosed pliers and a cat's paw .

So, not quite as poor as rural Mississippi then ?
