Count how many are from Nova Scotia.....that'll be just me then. Everywhere is great, even Halifax, it just depends what view you want from your windows etc.

think the fact my OH has been based in NS for almost 3 years now and we know the area well and own a house here, qualifies us to comment. To say everywhere is great is not true, especially in HRM. The OP asked a serious question, one that is important if you are moving to a new area, especially if you have children and you are looking at spending a lot of money to relocate.

In Nova Scotia while it's lovely countryside Cape Breton is very depressed with extremely high unemployment and huge painkiller habits (more expensive drugs just don't cut it there). It has it's nice bits, and it is pretty, but Sydney and Glace Bay areas are very much on the poor side with practically no industry or jobs to speak of.

Just the odd Cruise Liner turning up on a regular basis throughout the summer. Must be a spectator sport!

Surely the drug of choice on the east coast is oxycontin, not really a pain killer and about the same price as crystal meth in other rural locations. Drug abuse is, I think, a major feature of life in Canada but it's not particularly more of an issue in one location than another; weed is everywhere, meth is everywhere west of Quebec, oxycontin is everywhere east of there and crack is in all the cities. The drug abused is just the drug at hand, not the cheapest one in the country.

From: Lincoln, England but hope to swap for Halifax, NS in the next 6 months or so!

We are looking to move to the outskirts of Halifax due to oh getting a job at the airport. I have to say this thread has put the fear of god in me! How can any one take anything said on here seriously?!

Oh Lordy everyone has made it sound soooooo depressing haven't they! Yes there are depressed areas of NS and there are drugs available if you go looking for them. But then you only have to look at areas of the UK that are in a similar position. The average person on the street in NS does not come across major crime or drugs - the bad guys tend to hurt only themselves!
We lived in Bedford just down the highway from the airport - loved the place! no crime and we never came across drugs - a family friendly community - can reccomend the place!

The snark/sarc level on these boards can be pretty high at times, especially for those ex-pats whose moving to Canada hasn't turned out the way they thought, often having nothing to do with Canada itself. You'll need to take some posters opinions with a very liberal dose of salt.
