What was your biggest misconception about Australia?

Mine was my ridiculous first impresson of Sydney...I went home extolling the virtures of its impressive transport infrastructure
That's because I was a tourist in the CBD, amazed by how everthing came together at Circular Quay (ferries, trains, monorail (
) and not - as I am now - one of the suburban plebs stuck in commuter gridlock every day

That it would be easy to make friends. I have found Perth to be quite closed when it comes to letting expats in and becoming friends.

That could be a Perth-people thing. They're friendly, but perhaps a little immature?

However we just bought a flat panel heater the other night (brand is called Noirot - they are French made). Cheap as chips to run (around 20c/hour) but chucks the heat out really well.
Was so warm in our combined kitchen and lounge area last night (a large area at 36 square metres) that it was like being back in the UK

We invested in thick curtains as well - trying our best to keep a warm apartment during winter whilst minimising heating bills.

Cold..cold...and cold...and I even made sure that I came out here in winter just to make sure. Must have been a warm one that year. Still, be warm soon.
My dad in law was replacing a window in his house and and adding a bay. While he had the internal lining off the wall I asked him if he was going to insulate. "Nah, you get too hot."
I tried hard to explain that insualtion keeps you cool as well. Fell on deaf ears.
I'm not exactly young anymore, I don't need to impress anyone and my hair is kept short. Not too difficult to cut you'd think. Hairdressing.
Where are all the skills visa pommy hairdressers??????
