If Primark is suffering hard times it's probably a good sign for the economy!
HMV, Waterstones...hardly surprising...compare with Borders / A&R here. Companies that will find it very hard to compete with good online competition.

Output from the UK services sector rebounded sharply in January, suggesting the economy made a stronger start to the year, figures show.
Hotels and restaurants gave the biggest boost to the services sector, with output rising 4.4% on the previous month
Discretionary areas doing well there.

Methinks it's going to be a damn interesting year in blighty.
Add Debenhams as another company on the watch list.

Sounds like idle gossip to me, can't see them needing to be watched.
John Lewis profits jump 20% to £367.9m in 2010
Department store group John Lewis saw profits rise by 20%, or £61.3m, to £367.9m last year but has warned that 2011 could be more difficult.
John Lewis said that its 76,500 staff would share a bonus pool of £194.5m, with bonuses worth 18% of salary.
Nice! Retail isn't dead.

The govt is treading a fine line...I watch with interest.
We hear that the economic problems are catastrophic, yet they say they can balance the books in 3 years...something doesn't quite add up there. I think there is a chance they are being irresposible (too much cut, too quickly) to get what they want done before the next election.
A bit like me saying, sh!t I've put on 10kg in the last 18 months, better lose it by Easter.

Milliband? Michael Foot part 2. Good luck to the UK if he gets in - they'll need it.

Michael Foot was an amazing politician one of the best over the past 100 years, however he was far too old when he was finaly leader of party, which is a sad fact. A GREAT MAN

He used to scare the crap out of me as a kid when he gave his speeches! As I grew up I realised he was just an angry commie looking for an audience, nothing to be afraid of. Quite a character though, along with Tony Benn.

Of course London is the word's largest financial centre alongside New York.

I spent 100pct of my UK working life within the square mile. Lombard and Fenchurch Streets.

There was a bit of an exodus from Hong Kong to Singapore a couple of years ago due to tax reasons. I worked in shitty Beijing for a bit...(after, like you many years in the city - on Camomile Street and then Lower Thames Street). Problem with moving the financial centre there is the time zone's all wrong. Also most of the Chinese companies I used to deal with wouldn't go through clearing houses so they couldn't trade with any one! (coal and freight derivatives).

I am British and i agree with you, as a generalization we are a pessimistic and cynical bunch. A touch of both is not always a bad thing.

The views on Thatcher are fascinating.
She seems to be highly regarded by two groups of people. Generally those who lived and worked in the South East during her time and those who were kids/unborn.
She is almost universally loathed by everybody from the UK outside of those two groups.

As a more mature person today i understand the hardships suffered by many in the UK during her leadership, but there is no denying she changed the country and especially the north for the better.
