Thyroid Thread - Part Deux
#16
Hi Holly, welcome to our little thyroid world
ausi, I hope you get some answers soon and can concentrate on getting well again.
I had my bloods done yesterday and learned the hard way - if you're fasting, eat your dinner later than 6pm and then get out of the door well before 11am, especially in 30+ degrees. Man, was so dizzy by the time I'd finished.
Stupid girl.

Stupid girl. But then i spent another two hours at the hospital with them trying to get any blood out as i suffer from Raynaud's and my body was cold and they found it hard to get the blood out.

When I was at my most unwell they struggled to get mine, too. It puzzled me as I'd always been a good bleeder but it happened too often and in too many clinics to be the nurses' incompetence. I often ended up with it coming out of my hand which can be painful.
This lasted a couple of years but seems to be fine again now.

How are you all doing folks?
It's cold in the mts ...cold and wet and I'm glad of it because after weeks of hot, dry weather, and 38 degrees of heat plus wind, it's a miracle we haven't had a bush fire.

Well Nic's on day 2 of the pig one (sorry, I know a crap term, but you know what I mean ...
) She's lost absolutely no weight since goin on Thyroxine, altho DID stop gaining! ... and has been on it long enough now to have gave a good go.
Also, does anyone know if the pig will sort out hair loss? Nic reckons the dodgy thyroid is to blame for it. She doesn't lose heaps, but more falls out than used to.
Any help appreciated ...

Yep, well-known symptom, along with painfully dry skin.

Oh and can anyone help with these questions from Nic.
Can you take the pig at night? The only instructions she has are that it has to be taken in the morn. Just wondering if this is adhered to by all ?!? Reason being she takes other meds in the morn and wants to do the thyroid one like the other (Thyroxine)
Which leads on to the other query.
With the Thyroxine she couldn't eat either side of taking it. 1 hour this way, 2 the other, or to that effect, but there's been no mention of any kind of regime for the ole pig one ...
Can it be taken on it's own, last thing at night with a glass of water I guess is my overall question?
Cheers

Same deal as the Thyroxine, Paul. Her doctor should have told her that (the one used by most of the Sydney ladies dishes out a handout).
I take mine just before bed too. Not sure if I'm supposed to but I have so much else to take I have to fit it in somehow.

Well Dr B told me to take mine around 8:30 every morning and an hour before food and never take them with fruit juice or coffee only water. Thats what is on the bottle of tablets as well. Hope that helps a bit.
Just to add I take 480mg of the natural thryroid (the pig one) a day now.

Ok I just dug out the paper and it does say before breakfast so I must have read the bit about the time period after food elsewhere. I take mine at night so that I don't take it right after food, as I take some other scary stuff on a morning that I can't take near food, and I have to fit a lot of calcium into my schedule (osteoporosis).
I read that you should take it either half an hour before food or at least two hours after, but Dr B just says:
It has to be taken 25 minutes before breakfast with a glass of water. Avoid taking iron supplements and calcium as well as orange juice with the capsule, as they impair absorption.
(I can scan the handout later from my other comp if anybody wants it, but it includes info about experimenting with and increasing the dosage, and I'd hate it to contradict anything your own doctor has told you. Let me know if you'd still like it.)
