No, had to pay for it :(

It's pretty lightweight - very intuitive. The remote feels cheap and nasty though, and both the Roku box and the remote have fabric labels on them which are frankly wank.

But it is super easy to use - the sort of thing you could give to your parents and not have too many worries that they wouldn't be able to use it.

Plex is now available on Apple TV - for those who prefer style over substance

Is that for watching/uploading your own content?

Must...resist....

Don't show me that - I'm already getting enough grief over the drone I'm building with me son. If I brought a Compute Stick home it would be war!

Just cancelled my Foxtel sports package. No EPL. Might bring it on next year when the Super Rugby kicks off.

Foxtel must be struggling. They offered to reduce the sports to $10 a month if I kept it on. No thanks. Then tried to flog me the movies as a replacement. No thanks. Then threw in the movie package free for 3 months. I went through the movies - there's nothing on there.

Still hanging in there with $25 per month for the Entertainment package and the recorder box just to keep the wife happy.

Not sure how they are going to stay in business.

At the moment they are treading water - with subscriber numbers static and any growth coming from free trials to presto.

The longer term problem however is two fold :
  • With people having plenty to do, the time they can give over to TV is shrinking - and they want to watch the few programmes they like at the time they want. Broadcast channels are not a good match to that.
  • The price is ~$10pm, not $25pm + $25 for sport + whatever movies cost. Their cost structure is out of whack for what those that still bother with TV are prepared to pay.
I feel that over the next 10 years there's going to be a clear out in the channel based offerings. As the subscribers fall away the amount those like Foxtel can pay for rights to sports/movies falls away, and they are into a vicious spiral.
My guess is they end up being a carrier for PPV sports events and just-out-of-cinema PPV movies - and the subs and filler falls away. Both of which in 4K.

Considering the time difference, how important was the EPL to Foxtel?

For me, not so. I would watch a few games that fell in awake time. Late at night, early morning, but I have mates who religiously record all games and watch later.

Are you saying I should only be paying $10pm for the Entertainment pack + recorder IQ2 box thing? You could be right ..... Foxtel profit from ripping off the consumer.

I agree. I'm really not sure what Foxtel's next move is. The IQ boxes seem to be the selling point right now but at the end of the day, they are only good for recording. With streaming there is no need to record. You pick and choose what you want to watch and when - even sports. You could choose to watch it later if you can't make the live game.

I don't think as an individual item on its own, it was too important, but it made up part of a more compelling package of reasons why people had it. I think that now it's a much less attractive proposition, and without that element, the maths don't stack up for keeping it, if you aren't an avid NRL fan as well.

More that $10pm seems to be a level that people will accept, even maybe buy two such services. It's hard to sell an entertainment pack service at $25pm.

Exactly, what's the point of a recorder when you can just download what and when you like? Even more so if you only pay for exactly what you want to watch.

My guess is murdoch will look to integrate his satellite and cable offerings around the world much more, such that he can get economies of scale. He then looks to buy rights to things on a global basis, rather than a national one - with a bigger bag of coin to jingle at the rights holders.
