Has anybody tried this streaming site?

http://rainierland.com/

Looks like quite a few new movies there, and no login, signup or subscription required.

Did any of you see this article panning Telstra's decision to go with the Roku 2?

Telstra TV will be a dud

What on earth is he wittering on about? Tuners?

I think Mr Colley is kind of missing the point by a country mile (why are you going to bother with FTA, which you already have anyway) - I wonder if he works for one the commercial channels when he's not writing drivel?

The key question is going to be cost. The revised NowTV box has launched in the UK for £15 ($30) for basically the same hardware (don't bother if you have an original NowTV, it's basically the same).

If Telstra take a long sighted view and price their rebadged box at the same price, they will have a winner on their hands. If they try and change $100 then it's much less likely to attract people.

And if they really want to win, they need to not count movie/TV downloads from services using the box (inc Netflix).

What a rubbish article - it's from a mindset stuck in the past. A bit like Australian terrestrial TV in general. I laughed when he wrote that they were 'allowing' Netflix onto it - like they have a choice if they want to stay relevant!

Why did they go for the Roku 2? The 3 is much better and I think the 4 is due very soon

I liked Roku until they hard-coded DNS into it (US version - I think the UK model is still okay)

I still reckon the the Amazon Fire TV is the best small box, non-HTPC, streaming device around. A fantastic piece of kit. I enjoy the voice search and I noticed recently that when you pause a show, it brings up the names and pictures of the actors currently in the freeze frame, with links to their bios

Mr Robot - top, top series about hackers. Very dark, sometimes funny, sex, violence, drugs, lesbians - it's got the lot

Hand of God looks good. Saw the pilot on Amazon the other night. Main series starts next month

Since things have been afoot, here's a roundup of the news:

Chromecast 2 & Audio

https://ausdroid.net/wp-content/uplo...al-730x411.jpg

So overnight the Chromecast 2 was launched, same price as the old Chromecast, but with new better wifi and nauseating colours for some reason. No 4K video though, nor any word of better memory/proc, a major cockup IMHO. At the same time the Chromecast Audio was launched, a Sonos like solution for having speakers round the house, all syched to the same audio feed, but not paying the silly money of Sonos. It's the same price as the Chromecast 2 - which is daft. Both not in Australia at the start (we is filth, apparently).

Oh, and spotify on chromecast launches, together with family pack for google music.

Telstra TV

http://www.smh.com.au/content/dam/im...9946707001.png

The rebadged Roku 2 box that Telstra are supposed to be launching to make a grab for the streaming market has been delayed till Oct. It launched fine for £15 in the UK and the new NowTV box, but Telstra claim they need more time to integrate with the broadband packages(!) Rumour suggests the actual problem is it's slow and buggy after Telstra got their hands on it. No news on if this is incompetence in modifying the firmware, or if it's Telstra's backend network, but worth waiting for the reviews to come in, particularly if they overprice it at $99. Rumour also has them missing Netflix at launch.

Roku

http://www.aftvnews.com/wp-content/u...owatermark.jpg

The new Roku 4 has passed through the FCC, with a new wider box and the rumour of 4K compatibility. Thought to be launching real soon now, it's expected to come in at US$99 with the Roku 3 dropping in price.

My experience is all these poxy STBs, etc are useless and a waste of money. Get yourself a decent mini/nettop PC, wireless mouse and keyboard and hook them up to your telly. That way you can stream pretty much anything you want.

I bought a Chromecast about 3 months ago: I got it working after several hours' tinkering but that only lasted an hour and after that it refused to connect again. Same to present day.

The answer to 99% of all Chromecast problems is to use the supplied PSU to power it. People plug it into the USB1 sockets on the back of their TVs, think it's working, but the juice isn't there to make it work reliably.

Mine sits there, plugged into the back of the AV amp, not giving any hassles at all.

My experience, after having a HTPC, etc. is that they are more trouble than they are worth to keep working. If they are based on Windows, they are a nightmare, and even if they are Linux based there are too many flaky updates.STBs tend to just work, so provided they do what you need, you have less total hassle.

I've never attempted to use it without the PSU!

I had that setup once. It was all a bit of a faff. Turn on this device, turn on that, ooops battery runs out on wireless mouse, nowhere to put keyboard / mouse when sitting on sofa.

If you haven't got the smarts in the TV then best off going for a device. I'm on the Chromecast. Can't say I've found a great deal of use for it but it does do away with the mini tower, wireless keyboard mouse faff and its perfectly good for streaming content from the main players and casting from the phone. If you have downloaded video it does a good job of playing that from a PC too.

Pull it out of HDMI and power and try again? You know ..... a reboot. Generally fixes most things. :)
