Her role ? She is the Queen of Australia as well as 14 other Countries.

If the Australians want Ned Kelly to be the head of Government, well, he's dead now, so it's too late.

Also Ned Kelly would not be as popular with the The Royal Humane Society of Australasia, the Partially Blinded Soldiers' Association of Australia, the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, the Scout Association of Australia and the Mothers' Union in Australia of which she is patron.

The queen, via the GG, holds the following powers:
  1. The power to appoint a Prime Minister if an election has resulted in a ‘hung parliament’
  2. The power to dismiss a Prime Minister where he or she has lost the confidence of the Parliament
  3. The power to dismiss a Prime Minister or Minister when he or she is acting unlawfully
  4. The power to refuse to dissolve the House of Representatives despite a request from the Prime Minister
Just imagine if Ned Kelly could have done that....

Patron of this, patron of that.ie figurehead with no role whatsover of any substance. Australia doesn't want her, Scotland doesnt want her so give the people the referendum to get shot of her and see what the outcome is.
Without meaning to offend, only English people see her as some sort of hero from days gone by. The rest of us see her and her hangers on as remnants from a past age.
Still more life in him than Lizzie and Phil.

Australians love the monarchy.

They still wet themselves over 'princess Mary' at any opportunity.

Put it this way, think of the wars and bloodshed of our ancestors fighting for king/queen and country only to have the plug pulled on the whole affair a few centuries later on the basis of them not being cool enough anymore or because they meke certain nations feel inadequate. The fact that their a tourist drawcard is enough reason to keep them.
