I feel sorry for her, I'm sure she has stuff going on in her life, but as you say I've paid for my seat, and if I couldn't fit in to it I would've paid for two........

The ironic thing is that I've been up all night at work and as soon as I get on the plane I will be comatose - and if she is next to me I will probably snore in her ear all the way
Ah but what if you get in a set of 4 - huge one side of you and the mum and bub the other

Have you managed to upgrade to Premium this trip?

I've got a bid in to upgrade from Singapore but its not confirmed yet Apparently I'm now a Silver member cos I fly so much so I should stand a good chance. i shall sleep like a log all the way to Changi anyway, I've just done 6 night shifts in a week so nothing will keep me awake for the next few hours - good planning or what

I think you should have your own special Polly seat on a plane - you keep them in business.

It should be black with gold stars on it with purple silken seats.

Oooh sounds blissful!!!

Qantas Club in Brisbane aren't too impressed with me though, flight delayed by an hour cos the lickle video watchy thingy won't work properly........so I have just cleaned out their cheese AGAIN and they are restocking for the second time

Stuff the video-watchy-thingy, there is actually a guy at the reception desk dancing and singing, he says if the flight will leave on time he will be the in-flight entertainment The look on the face of the girl at the desk is indescribable, she doesn't know whether to laugn or scream!

I've seen a few really really large people in the terminals about to fly and I often wonder how on earth they do it without having a DVT etc (a friend of mine has just had a PE caused by flying and he's as skinny as.....) as there is no way they could wriggle around in the seat to keep the blood moving or it wouldn't be so easy for them to keep getting up and down.

Airlines do work on an average weight per person, this used to be around 10.5-11 stone but I wonder if they have upped it although they make seats smaller not larger! I know the NY subway has had to introduce larger seats for it's "wider" passengers so I guess airlines will have to start to do something. I suppose they could all go for the new Ryanair standing seats as at least you won't squash out when you sit down!

I myself am a shorty (5' 1") but I have just as much trouble on some planes as quite often the seat is too high so my legs dangle (nice for DVT creation) if they are airlines like QF who don't have foot rests!! When we had our upgrade in SIA biz class it was sheer heaven with the extending seat but I think we'll have to do many more flights before we have enough points to do that again.

But to answer to original question then yes, if a passenger is over a certain size then they should pay more for extra seating because of 'elf and safety to themselves and the passenger/s next to them. As Moneypenny pointed out had there been an emergency she wouldn't have been able to escape very easily.

Bottom and hand luggage measuring/weighing at check-in?

With one or two exceptions I don't think full service airlines are making seats smaller.

Maybe compared to some heyday back in the 60s but for as long as I can remember a 737 has had 3-3 a seating arrangement, a 767 2-3-2, a 747 3-4-3 etc etc.

This isn't going to change, if it did we'd be going back to that heyday when most people couldn't afford to fly.

I don't think it's width ways it's changed mate but length ways - so seating is still same as above, except the distance between the seat in front of you and the seat at the back of you is less?

Maybe, but the difference would be slight...and it wouldn't have any impact on the seat spillover problem.

the difference could be a couple more rows put in mate

In the case of tall people their leg room is compromised squashing them into the seats. I am that person

I weigh 12 stone, I am 2 stone overweight, I can still fit in an airline seat but I would never ever expect another passenger to lift their armrest to make room for my excess weight, I would have to upgrade or book two seats.
