Re: Scottish Independence

I wonder if this has been considered.

If an independent Scotland does start to suffer economically, which a lot of people seem to believe will be the case, then one would expect a lot of economic migrants to flee South, especially those that were not supportive of the split in the first place. For a country where space is at a premium, this could become the next Polish/Eastern European/Muslim immigration debate

Scots have been moving to England for ever, but it certainly would have been interesting to see how a Scotland, on its own, would have handled the current economic conditions and what that would have meant to population movements.

Well I can't comment on the English feeling towards the Scots, but I have no desire to live in this country anymore anyway. I am personally against independence, but you lot should be more careful in the future. Your "banter" comes across as hating.

That's because you have entered the Aus forum when you are clearly not a regular here. Therefore you see the banter between friends of Scottish and English backgrounds as hatred. If the same debate were happening on the Canadian forum I would not think twice about joining their debate, as the context would be lost on me

Well the debate on the Canadian forum went very similarly. To me, the subforum is irrelevant when it comes to Scottish independence. The issue is something we can all relate to. FYI, I'm in the Uk now. Was in Canada, but I'm leaving for Japan in two months. Not much traffic in that subforum, but I like the BE forum, so I'm happy to discuss the independence issue anywhere.

It may well do, but in the real world I would suggest that the Scots spout more vitriol in the direction of the English, than anything flowing the other way.

Well I have never made any racist remarks towards an English person, but have had it the other way several times. We're neighbours, we're bound to dislike/hate each other.

Try reading the thread without the tartan blinkers. Much of it is a piss take, between posters who have posted to one another for years. It's not intended as serious comment... but there is a definitive undercurrent from the English posters along the lines of "you've been telling us for years you hate us and you're off. Well just get on and ****ing do it then. You won't be missed"

If that attitude comes as a surprise to some Scots, it really shouldn't.

Yes we know.

Bristol was a dump (like most other cities to be fair) but it just seemed worse than the others (well there was Plymouth too I suppose). :huh:When I lived in Torquay, I would often head that way for a spot of retail therapy, but was quite happy to be getting the bus home at the end of the day. :D
