Alex Salmond: Let's cheer on 'Scolympians' instead of Team GB

The thought of millions of Scots cheering on Team GB at the London Olympics appears to have been too painful for Alex Salmond to bear.

"Scolympians" or Team GB? Games flare secession row

(Reuters) - Some call them Scotland's "Scolympians", others say it's Team GB all the way.

An impressive performance by Scots in Britain's Olympic team - third in the medals table - has dragged the world of sport into an Olympian tussle over Scotland's bid for independence.

Scottish athletes have won 11 of Britain's 48 Olympic medals and have matched the German and Italian hauls of seven golds. Not bad for a country of about five million people - just a twelfth of the British population.

The Scottish National Party (SNP), which controls Scotland's devolved government, plans to hold a referendum on secession in 2014, and in a video wishing athletes good luck ahead of the Games SNP politicians pointedly avoid the word "Britain".

Scotland won't vote for Independence, most Scots understand that. Alex Salmond has given Scottish people a good run while the SNP has been in charge, but it is not sustainable.
I don't see any other party governing Scotland in the near future though. So long may his policies continue.

+1. Salmond is a very bright politician who uses classic brinkmanship to get concessions about of a beleaguered bigger power. He has no intention of securing independence of Scotland. His threats to hold the referendum around the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn/Commonwealth Games in Glasgow summer 2014 are classic. See the rise in British nationalism over the separate countries during these Olympics? Now you know why Cameron wanted the referendum now.

It's been sold as if this were battle between two opposed sides - whereas it's two parties with the same aim going through the motions.

No matter what happens, Cameroon can't lose.

Expect the Tories to appear to 'drop a clanger' sometime around Sept 2014 - something about them being natural slaves and incapable of managing their way out of a wet paper bag should do it.
