I thought he'd died years ago up until the World Cup when I realised he was still alive. He had a kidney transplant in 2004 and was so unwell that I must have just assumed that he had died. Such a sad end to such a great sportsman and so young.

RIP to a genuine legend

Made me quite sad too. One of the legends of RU and he just lit up the field when he had the ball. RIP.

I remember seeing him on TV in the 1995 world cup destroying the England team almost single handed, running down the pitch with 2 England players hanging on to him, unable to do anything about him.

Given that he died suddenly just after a long haul flight from Europe, it does beg the question, did he develop a DVT? It does seem as though his kidney problems were well under control with dialysis, but he may just have been more suspect than other people.

Awesome. I remember that game. It was basically all over at half time but England refused to buckle and really came back at them in the 2nd half and it ended 6 tries to 4. Carling was brilliant

He certainly changed rugby forever in that world cup. All teams couldn't figure him out - except South Africa. Our boys saw what needed to be done to stop him and did it. They refused to cower - especially one J Mulder:

I don't normally get emotional about the death of famous people but I have to admit, I had a bit of a blub today

RIP big fella

You'll never see another talented "hands in the ruck" expert in your lifetime. :)
