Is this for real?

When I worked at the women's hospital here there were women who were coming in for their 4th, 5th, etc abortions. They didn't want to use depo or "forgot" to take their pills but didn't want children. Yes, there are women who use early first trimester abortion as birth control.

I read this article this morning about how they are trying to de-criminalise abortion in NSW and how one doctor was actually charged for performing an illegal abortion.

So do women 'state jump' if they want a termination? It has been said those opposed to changing the rules fear more abortions will be carried out but surely you can't force a woman to go through a pregnancy and at the end of the day, everyones situation is personal to them.
I never knew it was illegal there, imagine having to make that hard decision and then be made to feel like a criminal into the bargain, I guess the government think that by not allowing it, people won't do it.
Very sad situation when the State can rule what happens to a womans body.

I also did not know it was illegal until I saw somone talking about it on Q&A, by the way.

States all round the world legislate over people's bodies. You are not supposed to pump yours full of heroin, for example, so they make purchasing and dealing it illegal. In the case of Qld and NSW the legislatlures there have decided abortion is limited to cases where the health of the mother is jeopardised.

Joho and TMRE my heart goes out to you both. I know the agonising I went through - and I had a choice. I can't imagine what you both went through when you knew you could only make one decision.
To those who condem abortion, I hope you never find yourselves in the position where you have to make that decision. Believe me it is not at all a nice place to be.

I don't have strong opinions on abortion. I am unhappy just to absolve myself of all responsibility by saying "people should be able to do whatever they want" in the classical liberal argument, i.e. so long as no one else is harmed.

I know what you're driving at but I don't think heroin is safe in any environment, unless we are talking about general opiates maybe used in pain relief.

I allow for this when I refer to general opiates. To get back on track. my point was that substance abuse is illegal to protect the person, and in this we have a case of the state legislating over people's bodies. I point this out because someone said that it was a "sad day" when the state has this authority in terms of abortion, but I point this out to demonstrate the state has always has this power and used it too.

My only thoughts on abortion are that I am extremely lucky to not be in the position of somebody contemplating having one.
I just don't think an outsider can possibly know the turmoil and heartache that goes into that decision and I would never, ever try to impose my opinions on a man or woman that had to make that decision.
