Kinda apprehensive as I'm going on my own and have no real idea what I'll come across as these areas were some of the worst affected by the 'inland tsunami' as it raged down the range from Toowoomba! Here goes nothing...:o

best wishes Jen, please make sure that you let someone know where you are going (I probably sound like your mum saying that:D).

Yesterday I talked to mate about the floods they are having at the moment. He said that it has been pi$$ing down since morning, the water is waist deep, and the wind is at gale force. His wife has done nothing but stare through the kitchen window for hours, and hours - she just stares. He says that if it gets much worse he may have to let her in.

I did, as soon as I knew where I'd be working I text the OH the address! Cleaned up a cabin at some random families place, they let it out etc and it'd been inundated with mud, sludge and debris so I left it sparkling for them, I REALLY stink now tho so I'm off for a shower lol

Just got an email from daughters' teacher. It seem the piano school (in Kenmore) was badly hit by the floods despite being a comfortable distance from the river.

They lost:
- Countless shelves of sheet music
- Several Kawai grand pianos
- Several Kawai upright pianos
- Digital recording gear
- Office Computers
- Photocopier/Printer
- Drum kit + Keyboards
- Air conditioners
- Soundproof cladding in walls
- All electical cabling
- Some non-brick internal walls
- Carpets

..and have just discovered their insurance has a 'flood exclusion' clause and so will not pay anything.

I'm gutted.... We may only have been involved with the school for a few months - but there has been significant bonding and I have enormous respect for the teachers and students.

I hope this is just a dramatic footnote in the schools history and not a deathly blow to the business.

Be very careful - some of the road surfaces are dreadful

The OH accused me of being tasteless with that one ... considering she is an Aussie I consider it a major achievement.

It was sent to me by an American.

Which part of this is strangest I cannot fathom.

I think I'll have to pinch that one
Dont get me started about my Aussie wife and tasteless jokes.
She hasn't let me finish a Princess Di joke in 10 years of marriage.
What is it with them ?

I am content to snigger to myself most of the time, my dark dark heart is easily amused :D

I'm beginning to hear a few alarming stories from acquaintances about the zeal with which the clean up in Brisbane was carried out last weekend.

One family suffered only light damage. Only their carpet got wet so they returned home and lifted it. Next time they went back to the house they discovered that the gib board had gone too - people had thought that because the carpet had gone that the walls needed to come off too, even though they were fine.

Another was a landlord whose tenants were in New Zealand. He went round to see if there was damage to the house and what needed to be done, only to find that their door had been broken down. The house had been stripped bare and everything disposed of by volunteers. The occupants didn't have a chance to salvage anything, all their jewellery and anything else that probably just needed a rinse off, was gone.

Almost worse than getting looted

There are several stories like that, volunteers are being sent into homes where the owners aren't present, and i just think that's so wrong. Even in some cases there are stories of people putting signs outside asking them to stay out unless the owner is there and the signs are being ignored - same result as in your post, everything is being thrown out, no chance to salvage anything. Its so sad, and its just wrong. Its still someone's home even if its flood damamged and random people shouldn't be accessing it without permission. I'm sure the volunteers are well intentioned, but those in charge need to set a few ground rules.

(thats me talking personally, nothing to do with work)

Would have thought they would have paired you up from a general safety point of view. What with looters, risk of what you might find Inc. snakes that have took up residence and just incase you hurt yourself cleaning up.
