Why?

Because it completely kills the point of the original thread. There's been times when I've been enjoying participating in a thread, only to find that the next time I check it, the whole topic has gone completely onto another tangent with the original people conversing drifting away.

Oh, and just for the record. This thread was for 'Pet hates on BE' not 'Pet hates in The Barbie'.

I'm guilty of that one from time to time . Mostly I'll do it for the new people during not so busy times so they don't think they question is being ignored and get all annoyed.

Plus... in my defense sometimes I really don't have anything better to do that day!

This.

It is happening far more frequently recently, and killing off threads where people are asking for genuine information.

The mods do a fantastic job on these boards, but I feel this is something that could be tightened up on. If a thread is seriously going way off-topic there needs to be a bid of admin control.

In addition to the other comments, remember that the Mods are volunteers and can't be expected to read every thread - which is the only way of keeping track of how each thread is going. And not only would we have to read every thread but we would have to keep revisiting threads in order to keep up with how discussions are going. Its just as easy for any poster to interject with a request to get back on topic if they think a question hasn't been answered - and often people take more notice of a fellow poster than they do of a Mod!

On topic, or karma-less?

OK, fair enough if its an issue with all of BE, but as far as the Barbie goes I thought it was the place for rambling idiots to just go off and blather on about everything and anything.

Is it, or is it not, so?

Exactly my point. If a mod asks that a thread get back on topic it becomes a case of over moderation in the eyes of some but welcome in the eyes of others.

My own opinion as a poster, not a moderator, is that it's annoying when every thread is hijacked by the same group of people saying the same things. However, if I don't like what's being posted I don't have to read or participate.

Now, as a moderator, so long as there are no rules being broken and nobody's reporting abuse then chat away in the Barbie.

Exactly and seen as I'm one of the 'accused' on this thread, I shall have to try my best to take this discussion off topic.
