Its getting so predictable that I follow a thread, then when a particular person starts to post, I stop following because I know thats the end of whatever the OP wanted to talk about.

Don't ask me who though, it would be cruel to post the names. But if they are reading this they should know who they are and perhaps it will ring a bell with them :o

This.

It is happening far more frequently recently, and killing off threads where people are asking for genuine information.

The mods do a fantastic job on these boards, but I feel this is something that could be tightened up on. If a thread is seriously going way off-topic there needs to be a bid of admin control.

Yes, this is dreadful and should be stamped on.

While I'm on... are Fisher and Paykel washing machines any good?

But you have to ask the question, how much info does a person need? When the question has been answered in the same way more than a dozen times, what's the point of anyone else posting?

That's a call of judgement I guess on the part of the mods. But surely if someone for example is asking for opinions on something, it's better to get as many opinions as possible. This isn't going to happen if the thread descends into something akin to a Benny Hill show.

I know that when I've seen a thread asking a question, and I go to the last page only to see the thread is miles off-topic, I won't bother answering. Because it's a sure bet that the OP won't be reading it.

Why? How many opinions does a person need to hear before getting one of their own?

The early bird catches the worm.

I agree with you, Wookie. However, it's a case of damned if you do and damned if you don't. If a thread is closed or people spoken to when they do this there is a huge backlash and shouts of over-moderation. On the other hand if nothing is done there are shouts of under-moderation.

Maybe it's time for people to grow up and start taking their chats to the chat room or MSN.

But the Barbie, by BE's own definition, is an 'off-topic chat forum'.

Is it, or is it not, so?

Re: Pet hates on BE!

Yeah it's bloody difficult. I know first-hand as I'm admin on another online forum and whatever you do is never seen as the right option!

However, in terms of what this forum is intended for, which I believe is a place for expats and future expats to obtain information and experiences from others in a similar boat, then when a thread goes madly off-topic a little nudge by a mod' is appropriate.

As you say, there's heaps of other places/opportunities for people to have chats, without the need to disrupt an informative thread.

Just my tuppence mind.

Yeah, but that surely doesn't give people free-reign to go into threads and completely deviate from the original topic?

Why not?

Totally agree, I'm always giving people karma. Whether it for something really funny, clever, helpful or just to be nice.

I do get some karma, but it's usually from all the same peole. Maybe some peole just don't do the karma thing, or have no idea what it is.

Have you been really funny, clever or helpful recently?

Even more annoying is when the first person to respond to that question quotes the entire thing, so you have to scroll way down over things you've already read just to get the response.

People need to learn and take the time to delete everything but the questions they are answering.

It's been known to happen from time to time.

Usually more helpful than clever though!
