He lost one of his legs on bailing out. The Germans arranged for the RAF to drop him a new one during an air raid. He promptly tried to escape and had his legs confiscated. They were later returned to him and he continued to try and escape until he was sent to Colditz in mid-1942.

Something like that. It was his legs that saved his life. He got a leg stuck in the cockpit and released a leg to bail, or it broke free. (You could argue that he could have wriggled a toe or an ankle on a real leg).
