Sure you don't get the sick and holiday pay, but the extra cash more than balances it out and makes it more than comparible to the Uk. :-)

Please give me more info on contracting!

150k is about right for a 5-star mcdonalds employee isn't it? or have i grossly miscalculated what i'm going to be earning?

Basic mate. Do some overtime, or make really neat burgers and you can double that no trouble.

there are lots of agencies, depends what sort of job you do. If its more IT then www.paxus.com.au or www.finite.com.au are a couple of the big ones. For other fields (e.g. Accountancy) Hays or Hudson are probably a better bet. All advertise both perm. and contracting jobs on www.seek.com.au (the monster.co.uk equiv over here).

P.S. I'd rate Hungry Jacks higher than Mackers! ;-)

Ah right, cheers. I'm in the CAD draughting field, so will be looking for a CAD role in engineering or architecture.

How come the money is better in contracting? Don't the agenicies take some of the pay? Excuse my naivity.

Yep contracting is fine with me too! Nice little earner if you can get it. Hourly rates are much higher than they would be in a salaried role, hence you can afford to let the agency take a cut.

CAD draughting is pretty close to what i would do, except you're an engineer, and I'm a designer! So we have a science/art crossover!

i don't suppose you would spend much time trying to make an exact shader for orange juice, as i have this morning (slow in the office today!)

Yeh they do, typically 10-15% of your day rate, however the end-company pays more for the flexibility of having workforce that they can recruit and layoff as per their demand. The economy is ticking along nicely over here - employment is at less than 3% (a 30+ year low) so contracting is a good place to be just now.

Without getting into too much detail, comparing my full-time UK salary for a south-england post-grad IT job and working out the day rate (e.g. salary div by 52 div 5) to my contracting day rate here 2 years after I left the UK I earn about 70% more (at the 2.5 exchange rate which has dropped lately).

Well, I'm currently working as an Architectural Technician, so in the design field, though I would like to cross-over into the engineering field perhaps. I don't get much design work though, mainly the technical detailing aspect, and some site surveying and setting out thrown in for good measure.

Well contracting sounds like it is for me. I would love to be able to earn 70% more than what I currently do. I was thinking I would have to take a 20% pay cut!!
So when I arrive, I need to approach a company such as Hays, with an interest to contract for them, opposed to my initial thoughts of just sending my CV out to potential practices for a permanent position.

When I moved out I orginally thought the same with the pay cut thing, but contracting seemed a good way to balance it out (if you can find a role thats suitable).

If you're interested then when you arrive probably best thing to do would be to check the job sites to see what agencies have jobs listed in your area of experitise (www.seek.com.au ; www.jobserve.com.au ; www.mycareer.com.au - to name the bigger ones) then contact them. You can also just contact the agencies directly, although some can be a bit dismissive on speculative enquiries.

Re: The Official Loners Thread

At last I find a thread for singles, I posted one a while ago, since almost every thread is about, schools, my OH, my teenage kid is..., family car, so I started feeling that they made a mistake on approving my visa, since I'm going alone, no family no kids and in order to go to OZ you MUST have at least one of those....well it made me feel like that.

Now, is my last week at work, I'm flying on the 8th of March, and I'm a cocktail of emotions, about leaving my 8 years life in London, leave my friends, weather forecast, the routine I'm running away from, the easyjet-ryanair-trips, my lover, my exes, I'm even enjoying this winter weather it was the worst summer but this winter had been lovely.....but that's what I wanted, I there's not real reason to stay here, don't own property, don't have wife or girlfriend...so Sydney seems to be place for me...I love the beach, surfing and that life style, so if I find also that special one who wants to share the ride with me...it wont get better than that......

As you can see from all this nonsense I'm writing, how emotional you can get when you're close to make the big move.

love to every one, and good luck!
