I dont really understand what tradewinds are. How is it that WMO are saying they expect very low radiation particles to reach Canada, and Eastern U.S by today, and to eventually spread round the entire northern hemisphere(as I said in very low doses, not harmful to health), but said nothing about Oz. US doesnt look much further than OZ.!!
Read somewhere the tradewinds make it hard to cross over from north to south, but I dont understand it. Can anyone enlighten me please. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/glossa...de_winds.shtml |
Re: Nuclear Meltdown?
Health & safety conditions at Chernobyl dramatically increased after the event as they had the world's media scrutinising them & they entered into partnerships with mainly US-based companies to manage the mess. Having said that they do still allow smoking on site even within the control rooms (which are still operational as some fuel still there, not just the f**ked one) which is a massive no-no in Western industrial safety culture, however I suspect they would have no Ukranian workforce if they banned smoking.
Regarding the workers at the plant in Japan - do we think they really are getting huge exposures? Clearly it is a possibility, but they raised the emergency dose limit from 100mSv to 250mSv (which is not enough dose to give rise to health effects). Wouldn't they have raised it higher or not bothered to release any info about it if they weren't at least attempting to manage exposure? This article about the media slant was published in an Australian populist science mag (which is an even more dumbed down version of New Scientist): http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/featur...media-meltdown One interesting snippet given was that the earthquake's destructive energy was 39 000 times that of the bomb detonated at Hiroshima. And lastly a map showing environmental dose rate info for the whole of Japan (unit used is the Gray which in the context of looking at relative levels can be considered equivalent to the Sievert): http://www.bousai.ne.jp/eng/ |

Re: Nuclear Meltdown?
I'm sick of all the shite being written in the mainstream (and non-mainstream) media that I am getting my updates from this website:
http://www.world-nuclear-news.org/default.aspx This site might not have all of the issues covered but it is better than most of the other stuff that is out there. |

Might be now, but I remember smoking in IT datacenters at one time... and that wasn't in the Ukraine. :)

I was using that & the IAEA site. The info is a bit delayed but that's cos they want to make sure they are reporting what facts they can rather than a lot of conjecture.

The problem with pumped storage is that you still require a baseload supply to do the pumping during the off peak hours. These are usually during the night, so you would have no sun to pump by solar, and no guarantee of any wind.
So that leaves either biofuels, coal or nuclear to provide that energy. S |

Re: Nuclear Meltdown?
So how many peeps here in Aus would be happy to have a Nuke Power Station built in their your town? Let's assume for the sake of the question that your house would be less than 10k from the reactor.

Talking of recurring personal hate figures, can we not send Thatcher out to the reactor, real close? Just as an ambassador you understand. |

I'd be happier with that than a brown coal burning power station. |
