But in modern society, we work with openly gay people, socialise with openly gay people - what do you do in that situation?

I've got gay mates, they know the score with me, I shag women but my entire life doesn't revolve around doing it and proclaiming it to the world, I expect, and get the same courtesy from them. Can't see a problem with that to be honest

As far as I am aware, those are both outside the law whereas being gay is not a criminal offence?

It used to be... probably still is in some parts of the world.
