I have already met the doctor that I am seeing at a seminar that he did. If I say he looks and dresses like columbo does that give you a picture
? He is supposed to be excellent though.

I used to work with a doctor in Canada who we all called Columbo. He dressed like Peter Falk, even had the messy hair! He was absolutely brilliant, though. And just like Columbo had a memory like a steel trap.

I lost a lot of weight before I came to Australia and are very lucky as I have not put it back on.
I still need to loose loads of weight and are considering the lap band surgery. Has anyone had it done and what are the experiences ? Any info would be appreciated. We have private health insurance so a lot of it is covered.

It can also be done under Medicare with a referral from your GP. There is at least a 2 year wait list for it to be done under Medicare, however. Also bear in mind that it is not a quick fix. You will have to give up a huge portion of the things you love now. No alcohol, no or very little meat, nothing with fizz (champagne, soda) no junk food whatsoever, nothing that will produce excess gas, etc. You will also have to be followed by a team including a dietitian and exercise program.
The surgeon I saw 8 months ago has said that I have to lose 10kg on my own before he would do surgery on me. I have to prove that I'm serious and not looking for a quick fix. My sister in Canada had it done and paid out of her own pocket for it. It was over $20k all tolled. She also had to have a psychological evaluation first.

I'm just going by what the surgeon told me when I went for my appointment. I don't drink much now, so giving up alcohol wouldn't really bother me too much if I had to. I could quite easily give up red meat for the most part, too. While I love a good steak, I prefer chicken or veg.
Congrats on the weight loss. I need to lose about 40kg, but would be over the moon with a loss of 28.

Appointment went well. Have to take myself off now to have an ultrasound and blood tests. He was very informative, told me all about the procedure, weighed and measured my height. Let me see the band and how it inflated/deflated etc. Asked me how long I had been big, why I wanted to lose weight, what diets I had tried and what I thought the outcomes would in the long term. Told me all the cons too, no quick fix etc, life wouldn't be the same again etc. At the moment he is booking surgery for early December but his secretary was waiting on 2 saturdays of theatre time in October so he can reduce his lists. I am down for one of those if he gets the theatre time. It went as well as I had hoped and I am excited and nervous at the same time. I am not very patient so I am hoping he gets his October theatre time and I can get it done then, should be off the liquids and the babyfood by Christmas then.
The dog looks cute but is being a little shit today!

My appointment is not until the begining of November. The surgeon is really booked up. I am hoping to be in by the end of January to get it done.
Keep me updated how you go and good luck with it all.

Sounds like it was very positive. So you have decided to have it done then, that is great. You are doing something positive for your health.

One of OH's mates was extremely obese and was told he was going to die within x amount of years if he didn't lose the weight (think it was about 5). He had the lapband a couple of years ago, OH saw him the other day and couldn't believe it. He said he's half the man he used to be! Looking good.
p.s. he said it was great to be able to see his man bits again!
