One thing though was that I didn't realise that they were set between two of her other trilogies, The Farseer and Tawny Man, it didn't have a huge impact as they were set in another part of that world but there were some cross overs that would have been better read in the right order.

I've started George R R Martin's Dance with Dragons now but although I'm loving the series of books, I'm not in the mood for such a big book, I've too much else going on at the moment. I need to find a light cheerful read. I might switch to Janet Evanovich (courtesy of our lovely Dreamy  ).

I've just re-read the entire series of Stephanie Plum (seriously, just marry Joe and be done with it) and wondering what Janet's other books are like. Anyone read them?

It's either those or Charlaine Harris' non-Sookie books (I've read all those ones now too - although I need to check to see if there have been any recent ones released)

Himself loves Martina Cole (I think I've posted that already in this thread) but her books do leave him wandering around for a few days repeating the above :D

Read the first few in the 90's... then I found them a bit 'Samey' so didn't bother with anymore

Quite fancying the live ship trilogy at the minute, whilst I wait impatiently for the second in the Discovery of Witches trilogy to be released!
(Now I remember what it was like waiting for the next Harry Potter!)

Did anyone hear the hype about the new British author on morning TV last week?
She wrote the books whilst studying at University... her name escapes me but the first of 7 books are due for release later this year.... and they are calling her the new JK Rowling.... Anyone remember the name???

Just googled. Samantha Shannon:

Apparently Rowling has a novel targeted for adults coming out in September as well.

I'm also waiting for Shadow of Night (Harkness) and Aaronovitch's Whispers Under Ground. I love that series...humorous, light reads.

Acid Row by Minette Walters. A very good book. Scarey because you could imagine it happening in this day and age. About how rumour creates havoc on a housing estate.

Just starting a good one about the Crusades, The Road to Jerusalem by Jan Guilliou, the early chapters are set in Middle Ages Scandanavia which is a refreshing change, interesting info about life there at the time :)

I've done the whiskey and nicotine plan before, I prefer my current one, I have a tad more energy ;)

Indeed, the rest are just diet quackery, the science behind them is clearly wrong and we should keep shovelling down the "healthy whole grains" and Special K while trying the balance the calories AND create a 3500 deficit to lose 1lb a week.

And if you DON'T lose that 1lb a week (as you surely must because you cannae change the laws of thermodynamics, Captain) then it is clearly either your fault for not following the diet closely enough or you didn't exercise enough ... you fat, lazy dispicable sloth.

And by the way, you now need some statins to help with that 'high' cholesterol and you are diabetic with no hope because this condition is progressive and irreversable ... here, have some insulin too.

It all makes sense now.

The Long Earth, co written by Terry Pratchett.
So sad that he is no longer writing on his own. His amazingly odd sense of humour comes through from time to time. It is an interesting concept and very readable. OH and I are sharing the book- he reads it on the way home from work and I read it at bedtime.

Re: Good book

After not finding time to do much reading for a few weeks I'm back with my nose buried in a book whenever I get the chance! About 800 pages into Dance with Dragons (George RR Martin) and still a fair bit to go! I found it a bit slow at the start probably because I was struggling to remember where everything ended from the last books but once I got over that hurdle, it's been a great read so far!

When I was struggling in the early stages, I had a little break from it and read Naomi Novik's Temeraire, Napoleonic war with dragons! I wasn't too sure when I got it that I would like it and had pondered getting it for ages and then fate stepped in and I got it at a book fair for $3 - glad I did as it was very enjoyable, quite a light read but good nonetheless.
