She was a doctor and had done a rotation on the NICU. After things were finally looking better, her baby was rushed to surgery after having a perforated bowel.
She was watching from the room above the theatre with her mother; her doctor partner, the baby's father, was in the theatre with the baby.
Things began to go very badly and she wanted to leave. She said to her mother that she knew how this would end, that she had seen premature babies leave the NICU for the operating theatre and never return.
Her mother said to her: "Your baby needs you to *believe* that he will get through this and that you will take him home."
As a parent myself, that was a profound thought: that we mustn't just hope, we must *believe* with an unshakable faith that our children will make it through life, because they know when we are uncertain and they may lose heart themselves.
Perhaps all the trials you had been through, before having Flynn, made it possible for you to know that even when things looked dark they could turn out bright. Perhaps it seemed unfair that your family, who had been through so much, should go through this ordeal. But I think, though you were weary, that you were better prepared for this, to accept and believe, than most people ever will be.
Flynn is a very lucky little boy to have such a family.
