And I got corrected by a 4 year old yesterday on my pronunciation of the word Zebra! She reckoned it should be Zeeebra and was visibly affronted that I could get it so wrong.

I was quite surprised in Australia how many kids said Zeebra, one of my own boys even said it a couple of times.

Ah, but do they say "an erb" ? That would have been gramatically correct back in the old days, just like you should say "an 'otel" rather than "a hotel". Things have moved on.....

One says jog, bog, log, and yoghurt.
However one says "to ga" and "yo- ga" due to the "a" (vowel) immediately after the g.
There are exceptions to every rule. Having been brought up with the short vowel sound, used since there is no vowel immediately after the g, any other pronunciation just seems wrong to my ears. I am still getting used to "harrASSment" rather than "HARRassment"- thank you Frank Spencer- which has come into popular use and is now deemed correct.
