Great idea. In a country that has to drastically cut government spending or become Greece mk2, and is cutting defence, police, health, education, they should keep spending big on 'youth services'.

I don't think most of these pricks are doing what they are doing because they don't have a pool table.

If they didn't have a pool table before, they'll have acquired one in the past three days or so... ;)

This, and the "violent video games" arguement, is absolute rubbish. If you are so old fashioned you would know that there were race riots in Notting Hill in 1976. Which music genre encouraged that?

Bob Marley.... ; )

Though seriously the NH riots aren't considered race riots. Those in NH during 1958 were race based though.

These jerks are rioting because they're sheep who're being led by bigger jerks. Poverty, lack of 'youth services', race etc are nothing to do with it.

Funny that given the most diverse population of the UK and the arrival of thousands of immigrants in all eras.

Really amazed at how little research is put into the news sometimes.

A similar thing to what was being discussed on a talkback radio show here in Perth. The host was implying that the riots are a result of out of control immigration in the UK, and that if the boat people problem is resolved the same will happen here.

The ignorance absolutely beggars belief.

Utterly. This certainly has nothing to do with immigration. I will concede that the UK probably does deal with more economic migration than Australia, but the majority of this is legal, with people moving across the EU borders as they have every right to do - for example the Poles and Czechs.

That really is pure fearmongering on behalf of the talkback presenters. Dispicable.

Economic hardship and social unrest make great bedfellows.

In the words of Shirley Bassey and the Propellor Heads...

Any ideas on why, so far, this is happening in English cities?

Is there an agenda or is it random opportunism?

I'm with you Ivan... it's random opportunism.

I agree. There's no plan or strategy here, just widespread disorder and opportunism.

There may well be an element of direction from social networking as to where the police are too stretched to deal with events effectively, but beyond that I don't believe that there are any 'leaders' as such.
