I am referring to the CAP, yes. I'd like to see a source for that 9% figure, but even if true it is still a huge amount of money. Have you ever checked the amount of cash sucked up by British farmers every year? It's insane.

Unlike their pork barrel British counterparts, Australian farmers have to work hard to stay genuinely competitive and efficient.

And as for the Europeans....

Farmers protest fall in milk prices by spraying Brussels police from cow's udder

Don't disagree, it is a lot of money. I was making the point that the UK gets relatively small slice of the CAP compared to neighbours such as France, which gets 20%.

It is far too compex an issue just to call struggling British farmers 'pork barrels' (I assume you mean landowners not the actual people that farm the land).

I agree the demise of the high street is not really Tesco's fault. I think in most cases it's the town council that's killed the high street. Tesco provides convenience whereas the high street provides inconvenience and parking fines.

You don't see the same problem in France even with its massive hypermarkets.

Does the CAP operate across all 27 EU states? If so, the 9% seems like a large number (even with France's 20%).

I may get chased by the angry mob, but I didn't ever like Tesco. I much preferred Sainsburys, Waitrose or the ever lovely M&S food hall.

However, that said, I for one enjoy the pleasant shopping at my local butcher, fruit store and fishmongers. The produce there surpasses any on offer at Woolies or Coles.

You build up trust and usually a good bit chat too. Much more pleasant way to shop, I enjoy shopping now.

Loads of charity n mobile phones shops though.
yes tesco had it all under one roof for good prices, but dam if you shop about you can get good prices by visiting some different places

That they did. They brought up the small shopping precinct and knocked it down for more parking, they even stopped a little man and his van selling fish come round - I'm more than happy with Woolies or Coles

Only because the council/government let them. If the authorities did not want this to happen then it would not have - not Tesco's fault.

Asymmetric "bribing". Tesco. Rate-payers.

I completely agree with you.
I can't think of anything worse than having Tesco move over here. I love that there are specialist shops still & good butchers on evry high street:thumbup:

To the OP, since when was Australia a 3rd world country? Is your assessment based entirely on the absence of Tesco supermarkets?

the fast pace of life and laziness killed the high street. People want to go to one place and get everything at the cheapest price saving time and money.
