ahh Thatcher. they're a funny family aren't they. One of them is charged with masterminding a military coup in Africa. Another is getting the boot for making racist comments about a colleague then tries to laugh it off as nothing serious.

You said pensioner in a large house, implies more affluent than the 5 people living in a slum
I suppose yes there are some services which are a cost per person. But, I would have thought overall it costs a council less to service 5 people in one property than 5 people spread out in separate houses.

Interesting-as I originally said- its not fair- but how odd it is that in fact it was the fanatical, politically correct, leftist agenda that drove me to believe I didn't want to live in my home country anymore......all those maggie bashing people out there-I never stated who I did or didnt support on that political subject-but I will say one thing- I bet it was her politics that enabled the majority of people on this forum to afford their own homes and to restart their lives in another country with the profit from those homes ....

But I say that Maggie selling off council housing was one of the worst things that was done and still afflicts the UK to this day. Sure people bought their properties - but all that I can see is that they are then priced at market value - which is too much for anybody to afford.
Or you have landlords buying up all the social housing and renting them out.
I was living in Manchester in an X council house. I noted how the three of us were paying each the same price per month as the woman next to us was paying for the whole house from the council.

Is that really any different to the left wing centrist government of Rudd hell bent on unfairly distributing tax payers money to his precious 'working families', thinly veiled as an economic stimulus package?

I know I am probably going to regret this post, but was the whole pole tax riot not caused by people not wanting to be responsible for paying thier own rates? The rates system (as I understood it to be) was that you paid based on the size of your home rather than the people actually using the facilities? that is not a fair system surely? an old aged pensioner widow in a large house on her own, was paying more than 3x what a family of 5 were paying whilst living in their council house on the rates system. therefore the new poll tax system said that was not fair and made each person over 18 responsible for thier own share of the 'rates' that basic premise is surely a much more fair system.
My recollection of the rioters was two fold. There were the people who, for legitimate reasons wanted to peacefully protest to register thier disagreement with the government at the time and then there were the lazy skanking w#####s who fancied a bit of a ruck (and many of whom were unemployed so wouldnt have to pay anyway)
I will now leave this post as I will not be held responsible for appearing to support the complete cock up that virtually every council in the country made of the system- providing uneven and below standard facilities etc etc. It didnt work out as far as I can see and now it seems that same old aged pensioner widow is now paying through the nose once more, the only difference is that so is everyone else too.....

Well the Torries certainly thought so as that is how they tried to sell which was taken hook line and sinker by the Right some of Middle England housed in the shires and all the Maggie Rooters.
At least now one pays according to type of property one is in, so unlikley to have someone renting and living in a small gaff paying the same impost as an owner occuppier further down the street sitting in a GB 800,000 house.

Hmmm, I've just realised that there can be no truth in the news report quoted in the original post.
I say this for the simple reason that it makes the assumption that Britain will be having a Summer this year. Now we all know how likely that is.....
I have it on good authority that this story was being written for April 1st, but got leaked early.

The British are crap at protesting they should have more like the French - although I don't mean the rioting which they have in the suburbs of Paris.
But perhaps not as many as the Italians where there are so many nobody really pays attention any more
Anybody read the book Phaic Tan? There was a passage saying that the civil servants all went on strike for six months - it was only called off when it was discovered that nobody had actually noticed

The Aussies aren't much better - There is very little activism here - People just shrug and say "That's life..."
The apathetic attitude seems to penetrate every facet of society too - from bank charges to political corruption, nobody seems to give a foetid dingo's kidney...

Others can disagree with me for saying this:

Little thought was given to future needs at the time.
