Besides some if not most services mentioned are not for the exclusive use of payers in that area but for all..roads is an example......At the end of the day it is ones philosophical stance on this issue that will determine which side of the fence they belong to with regards to the rights and wrongs of this impost.
I agree. I believe in a progressive tax system that taxes high earners at a higher rate than low earners. I believe that capital gains are akin to normal income and should be taxed accordingly (perhaps with less allowance). I believe in inheritance tax and think it should be expanded.

However, I am not sure we should continue this progressive taxation into every part of our lives, local taxation is basically paying for the local services of roads, police, street lighting, parks, etc etc. If one person in a 400K house lives next door to one person in a 200K house I don't see that they are getting any more services so why should they pay more just because their house is more expensive? If they have to pay more to "buy" their library services or their waste collection, should we next make people with expensive cars pay more for petrol in the garage (they have a more valuable car?), or rich kids on nice bicycles pay more for a mars bar?
