FFS talk about over reaction.....
Does that mean that any mother who calls her son Muhammed will receive the same? |

They're certainly a bloodthirsty lot - all their punishments are extremely violent, they're still in the middle ages :frown:

If the kids chose the name, then why is she being held responsible?
Surely the kids should be taking the blame. </IMG> |

I'm hearing that. I worked as a Physics teacher for 3 years, and it has put me off of kids for life! When I was doing my training, old stick teachers said that modern teaching was the most effective form of contraception. I absolutely agree with them now! S |

What an absolute crock of shit this 'religion' is.
There is another thread on here about what people want for Christmas. Here's what I want for Christmas: A world without Islam. |

There's plenty of harm done in the name of religion and it's not just in Islamic countries. |

There's plenty of harm done in the name of religion and it's not just in Islamic countries. Yes, that is true, but the Christain religions have been through a civilising reformation since the holy wars. Islam sadly hasn't, and maintains many of the barbaric injustices that the rest of the world dispensed with long ago. As for the acts of random wierdos and individuals/small groups now, well you can't account for them - they will happen anyway, given religion or some other stimulus. Th problem with islam is that there is a huge number of believers that feel it is right to carry on as if it were still the dark ages. S |

Th problem with islam is that there is a huge number of believers that feel it is right to carry on as if it were still the dark ages. S The other key point is that (most) western nations have reasonably secular societies, where religion and government are kept firmly apart. In most islamic nations it is very hard to see the lines between religion and the state, and then the state starts acting in such a way because the religious conservatives say that is the way it should be. Turkey is teetering on the edge of abandoning secular government in favour of sharia law, which is why the EU is so relectant to welcome them in with open arms. Other reasonably secular islamic nations of note are Pakistan (currently a dictatorship) and Iraq under Saddam Hussain. He only adopted islam as a means to generate support against a potential American invasion. Mixing government and religion really doesn't work, and I always get nervous when politicians use their faith as a card in elections etc. I'd rather it was kept entirely separate. S |
Re: Apparently the prophet is...
Just read iPoms link. What a total crock of bow locks. I would have thought, in my innocent way, that it would be worse for the bear to be called David or something "English". She's an English teacher FFS. Asks the kids to name a sodding bear and the kids do so she ends up in prison because that makes sense. Tw*ts :curse:

S And yet, there are plenty of western religious set ups which still run their religions as though they are still in the dark ages too. I've had direct experience of them... born again Christian churches who castigate women for wearing makeup, who re-enforce the 'male is the head of the household' idea in turn re-enforcing sexism and paternalistic ideas, which in turn leads to abuse... Many of these western practices are not 'small groups'. The FLDS is hardly a minority as born again Christianity isn't either. I've seen someone having demons cast out of them and in all likelihood, the woman was having a fit. I was the person castigated as a whore for wearing makeup by a male fundamentalist Christian preacher in front of hundreds of people and a very famous one at that. (I was 12 at the time) So don't think it's just Islamic religion which is still in the dark ages. There are also many very good people who follow the Islamic faith and who don't descend into the Dark ages... I think there are many more of them than there are fundamentalist nut cases. |
Re: Apparently the prophet is...
It's the same with all religions. A small minority give the whole a bad reputation. My main issue with any religious zealots is that they are generally the members of society who have little or no compassion for others. A total bunch of f*c*w*ts:curse:

No, but they are in control of the government, army, navy, airforce, chemical weapons, nuclear weapons etc. These groups that you mention are just that - groups - and even though some may be large, they don't (yet) hold any massed positions of power, which non secular islamic fundamentalists do... The worrying thing is what happens when they do start to gather momentum and make it into government with non secular ideas. S |

S The Catholic and Protestant religions in the west hold great power within government, as do other smaller groups. I think you'd probably be surprised how much the church influences policy making decisions. (Prime example, George Bush and the abortion law in the US, highly influenced by the church vote.... ) I guess I'm not because my dad's breakfast companions once a month were bigwigs (in local gvt and high church)... This is possibly why I'm such a cynicist ... or realist. Take your pick. |

George Bush acts in the name of a Christian God. He talks to him every day. They jail children until they are old enough to execute in the US.
They're all as barbaric as each other. |

Thought that you might like to know that she has been sentenced to 15 days imprisonment and deportation... the country is in uproar as they think that this is too lenient! the journalists are guessing that she will be deported over the weekend before the end of her sentence ( she has already served 5 days)
Religion never did anyone any good IMO... I'm an atheist for a very good reason... It beggars belief that anyone could believe in a higher power who could possibly condone such behaviour and treatment of others! This is the work of men who are keen to keep a country oppressed under a regime that suits them under the guise of Allah giving devine instruction.... Pah! complete and utter Bull I hate religion, and I truly believe that it is the root of all of the really evil acts carried out in the world today. |

I do think though, that someone in a country like that, esp someone intelligent, should be a little bit aware of using the name Mohammed at any time. Knowing the country as she did, she should have known better. No doubt she'll get another job and it's only deportation. It could have been much much worse, seeing as how the Saudi's like to cut off their women's heads for more minor 'crimes'. |
